Take a BMW 5 Series Touring, install a larger V8, rework the suspension, reprogram the automatic transmission, and then keep the whole thing so discreet that only those in the know understand what is sitting next to them at the traffic light. That is roughly how Alpina always did things. And perhaps that is exactly what made the brand so special.
This 2000 Alpina B10 V8 Touring is based on the E39 5 Series, but anyone who thinks this is simply a BMW with different wheels and a little more power is seriously underestimating the concept. The cars were prepared by BMW and then further developed and assembled by Alpina. The V8 was significantly modified, the chassis was retuned, and the transmission received Alpinaโs own distinct calibration. The result was a Touring that combined comfort, space, and genuinely serious performance in a brilliant way.
Under the hood lies the familiar 4.6-liter V8, producing approximately 347 horsepower in this period. More than enough to turn a practical station wagon into something that many sports cars of the day had to take very seriously. And yet the appearance remains wonderfully understated.
This example is finished in Alpine White III, combined with a beige leather interior and attractive wood trim. It is an especially tasteful combination, precisely because it differs from the dark blue or green often associated with Alpina. The light-colored bodywork, warm interior, and classic Alpina details work beautifully together. But perhaps the most appealing aspect of this car is the way it has been treated over the years.
Everywhere you look, it is obvious that this is an enthusiast-owned car. The bodywork, the interior, the details, even the additional floor mats that come with the car. This is not a case of someone simply happening to own an Alpina. This is a car that belonged to people who knew exactly what they had.
