1968 Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet L19K Yukon Yellow – Unmolested & Original
Finding a truly original and honest Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet from the late 1960s is becoming increasingly difficult. Finding one that has never required welding or replacement of its original body panels is something even rarer. This particular 1968 Beetle Cabriolet is a wonderful example of exactly that.
The 1968 model year is a particularly interesting year for the Volkswagen Beetle. It represents a genuine transition between the earlier pre-1967 Beetles and the “new generation” that followed. As a result, 1968 cars feature a fascinating combination of one-year-only and transitional details, making them highly interesting for enthusiasts and collectors.
This example is finished in one of the two factory colours available for the 1968 Beetle Cabriolet: L19K Yukon Yellow. The colour suits the car beautifully and gives it the unmistakable character of a late-1960s Volkswagen.
A remarkably untouched body
Perhaps the most special feature of this Beetle is the condition of its body. The car has never been welded. There has been no need for structural repairs or replacement of rotten sections, something that is becoming exceptionally rare on Beetle Cabriolets of this age.
Consequently, the original hinges, latches and other hardware remain as they left the Volkswagen factory in 1968. For anyone who appreciates originality and authenticity, this is a significant advantage.
The underside of the car was ice blasted last year, after which it was protected with clear coating. The cavities were thoroughly treated as well, preserving the solid original bodywork while providing additional protection for the future.
Mechanically sorted and ready to enjoy
The car has also received considerable mechanical attention. The engine has undergone a complete rebuild, and the mechanical condition of the car is excellent.
An additional and rather interesting feature is the mechanical brake booster, which considerably improves the braking characteristics and makes the Beetle noticeably more pleasant and reassuring to drive.
All maintenance and mechanical work has been carried out by a recognized air-cooled Volkswagen specialist and is supported by invoices and documentation.
Honest, original character
The Beetle was originally imported from the USA and has been resprayed at some point in its life. The quality of this older respray could have been better, and we believe it is important to mention this openly.
The interior remains largely original and, after almost 60 years, naturally shows the signs of use and age one would expect from an unrestored classic.
The white convertible top is also original in character and shows some age-related symptoms. However, it still closes perfectly, tightly and without resistance. A new dark brown tonneau/hood cover is also included with the car.
This is therefore not a freshly restored, over-polished show car. Instead, it is something that is increasingly difficult to find: a genuine, honest and structurally untouched Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet, with excellent mechanical condition and a fascinating transitional 1968 specification.
For the enthusiast who values originality, authenticity and the story behind a classic car, this Yukon Yellow Cabriolet offers a particularly interesting opportunity.
The car is being offered on consignment by Rietbergen Classics.
