The staging says everything before you read a word. A man in a white dinner jacket, tray in hand, leaning on the bonnet like the car's just pulled up outside a members' bar. That was the pitch: "Club car." Not a description of the interior, a description of the life.

Jaguar leaned hard into that fantasy for the 420G: burled walnut facings, prime hide leather, deep-pile carpeting, the kind of cabin that was meant to feel like a private room rather than a car interior. The lighting in this ad does half the selling, everything dark except the chrome and the white dinner jacket, the car looking less parked than presented.

Sixty years on, the ad still reads as an ambition as much as an advert, the sense that this was the car parked outside the room you wanted to be in.

The Jaguar XJ12 arrived at a time when most luxury saloons were still relying on six or eight cylinders.

Jaguar took a different approach. The all-new 5.3-litre V12 had been developed over years of testing, including work inspired by the marque's racing programme, before finding its way into the XJ. The result was an engine renowned for its smoothness. Owners often joked they had to check the rev counter at idle because it was so quiet.

The XJ12 wasn't just about adding more power. It demonstrated what Jaguar believed a flagship saloon should be: refined, understated, and capable of covering huge distances with remarkable composure.

It's one of the reasons the XJ12 remains such a special car today.

Meet 50EE.

Rebuilt in 2011 to celebrate SNG Barratt's 50th anniversary, she was supposed to be a showcase car.

Fifteen years later, she's covered thousands of miles, tested countless new products, attended more events than we could list, and even tackled the hillclimb at The Lucas Classic, Shelsley Walsh - where this year an enthusiastic start-line burnout from a certain company founder proved rather more durable than the differential.

Thankfully, 50EE was built to be driven, repaired and driven again. Somewhere along the way, she stopped being an anniversary project and became part of the family.

Girling's disc brakes were proven at Le Mans, where the real test wasn't outright stopping power but consistency: braking the same on lap 50 as lap 1, while drum brakes of the day faded away.

The line "For those few among us who are totally committed to excellence in all things" reflects the XJ-S's standing in period as Jaguar's flagship grand tourer. A 5.3-litre V12 delivered a top speed of 152 mph and 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds, figures that placed it among the fastest production cars of its day. Leather upholstery and air conditioning were included as standard, reinforcing the car's position as a coupe built for effortless long-distance travel rather than outright sportiness alone.

The Swiss registration plates suggest this particular advertisement was aimed at a continental European market, where the XJ-S found a receptive audience among buyers seeking refined performance.

Every fortnight, we'll be asking members of the SNG Barratt team one simple question: If you could own any Jaguar, which one would you choose... and why?

"If I could own just one Jaguar, it would be the Ecurie Ecosse D-Type that won Le Mans in 1957—the year I was born. It was also the first Le Mans-winning car to use Lucas fuel injection.

Adding to its significance for me, the team's official timekeeper at that race lived next door to me for more than 20 years. He sadly passed away recently at the remarkable age of 102."

It's International Cat Day, and we couldn't let it pass without a nod to the original Jaguar cats: the ones on the bonnet, not the ones curled up on the sofa.

The Leaper has been prowling Jaguar bonnets since the 1930s, and there's something rather fitting about it. Cats do exactly what they want, on their own terms, and couldn't care less whether that suits you, which, if you've ever tried to coax a Mk2 into starting on a cold morning, sounds about right.

So today we're celebrating both kinds of cat. The four-legged variety who'll ignore you completely unless there's food involved, and the four-wheeled variety that demands just as much attention and gives just as little away about what it's thinking.

New to the range 📰 Our catalogue keeps growing, and not just with the obvious.

Some of these parts were previously unavailable anywhere in the aftermarket. Others have been redesigned based on feedback from owners who actually use them, or added because we spotted a gap that was leaving a particular Jaguar model short of what it needed.

This time, that includes a right-hand fuel tank, a gear shift/selector indicator, the front wooden bow and header rail for the hood, a rear shock absorber, and a right-hand rear window regulator.
