Oil is your engine's life blood. Using the right oil will keep your engine running smoothly and efficiently, while the wrong choice will wreck havoc on your engine resulting in poor performance which will only leave with a failed engine at the end.
But choosing the right oil that meets your engine’s needs can be daunting, as there are so many options out there. That’s why we made a list of the relevant things to consider when choosing a suitable oil for your engine.
This include;
1. Viscosity
Simply put, Viscosity is a term used to describe how a fluid resists flow. Like water, your engine oil is a fluid and flows also when poured.
During operation, the engine generates lots of heat and pressure, your choice of oil must maintain its viscous properties at this adverse conditions in order for your engine to maintain optimum performance.
The viscosity of an oil is commonly represented by "XW-XX",
E.g For an oil A with rating of 0W-30 and another oil, B with rating 5W-20,
this implies that, at low temperatures, oil B will loose its viscous properties faster than oil A since B has a higher value, therefore, oil B will thicken faster making your engine more difficult to start at very low temperatures.
Then at high temperatures, oil B will loose its viscosity much faster than oil since it has a lower XX value.
2. Vehicle Type
Your kind of Vehicle and age goes along way at influencing your choice of oil. For new vehicles, your can find the manufacturer’s recommendations on the owners manual.
Also, most hi-tech engines require specific oil grade to keep them running at peak performance.
3. Oil Type
Depending on your engine type, any of these oil type may be suitable for use,
Conventional oils are the cheapest out there, the produced from refined crude oil with no additives. For the most part, they meet required standards for light engine vehicles and requires regular changes within a short period of time.
Synthetic oils are developed for hi-tech engines, designed for high performance and offers the best protection for your engine. Synthetic oils are far more expensive than the conventional oils. It is important to note that not all engine can use these class of oils.
Note that, for most modern engines and those who drive in adverse conditions, the synthetic products will be the best options since they are specially developed to remain stable in adverse conditions.
4. Location and Climate
For those who live in very cold regions, an engine which will not loose it viscous properties is required as the oil gets thicker in cold weather. Too thick oil will put more strain on your engine thereby reducing engine performance and life span. Also, the nature of the environment matters, rough terrains will subject your engine to strains leading to more oil consumption.
5. Your Driving Habits.
How you drive your vehicle is also a factor when it comes to choosing the right engine oil for your car. Do you drive at a steady pace or do you have a lead foot and frequently do jackrabbit starts? Is your car used for short trips within the city or do you frequently travel out of town with the car loaded with stuff?
6. Buy original always
Using fake oil products is just as bad as using the wrong oil if not worse. Such an action will only leave with dire consequences.
