THE SEAT BELT THAT SAVED A LIFE
One Moment. One Accident. One Life Saved.
A friend once shared a frightening experience with me—one that could easily have ended in tragedy. He told me that on several occasions, wearing a seat belt had saved him from serious injury or death in road accidents. But one particular incident along the Sokoto–Gusau road remains etched in his memory.
It was during the rainy season. The road was a single lane, and the surroundings were wet from the rain. He was driving at about 110 km/h, focused on the road ahead, when suddenly, disaster appeared from nowhere.
A car approaching from the opposite direction attempted to overtake another vehicle without checking properly for oncoming traffic. In seconds, the two vehicles were heading straight towards each other.
There was no time to hesitate. A head-on collision seemed inevitable.
Instinctively, my friend swerved off the road in a desperate attempt to avoid the oncoming car. But what appeared to be his only escape quickly turned into another danger. The roadside was wet, slippery and covered with grass. The uneven terrain made it difficult to regain control of the vehicle.
Then, in the blink of an eye, he lost control.
His car veered violently off course and began to somersault. Over and over, it tumbled, turning what had been an ordinary journey into a terrifying struggle for survival. Metal twisted, glass shattered, and the vehicle was reduced to a wreck.
When the car finally came to a stop, everything fell silent.
What happened next was nothing short of astonishing.
My friend emerged from the wreckage alive—and without a single scratch.
In the midst of the chaos, one simple thing had made a life-changing difference: he had fastened his seat belt.
Think about it for a moment. He was travelling at about 110 km/h. His car had somersaulted several times, and the wreckage told a story of how dangerous the accident had been. Yet, he walked away unharmed.
His experience is a powerful reminder that road accidents do not always give us a warning. A reckless overtaking manoeuvre, a slippery road, a sudden swerve or a moment of lost control can change everything in a matter of seconds.
We may not be able to control the behaviour of every driver on the road, but we can take responsibility for our own safety.
A seat belt may seem like a small thing. It may feel uncomfortable to some, or unnecessary on a short journey. But when an accident happens, that simple strap can be the difference between being thrown around inside a vehicle and being properly restrained in your seat.
There are countless stories and eyewitness accounts of lives saved because people took a few seconds to buckle up. Unfortunately, there are also tragedies that remind us of the consequences of neglecting this basic safety measure.
Never wait for an accident to appreciate the importance of a seat belt.
Before you start your engine, fasten your seat belt. Make sure your passengers do the same. Whether you are driving a short distance or travelling hundreds of kilometres, whether the road is smooth or rough, make it a habit.
You may forget that you are wearing it during the journey, but in a critical moment, it could be the very thing that helps you survive.
Buckle up every time. Every journey. Every seat. Every life matters.
Your seat belt is not just a strap across your body. It is a simple act of protection that could give you another chance at life.
Stay safe. Drive responsibly. Arrive alive!
