Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a common, contagious infection causing, painful, fluid-filled blisters or sores on the mouth (HSV-1) or ge****ls (HSV-2). It spreads through skin-to-skin contact, even without visible symptoms. While no cure exists, antiviral medications can manage outbreaks, reduce symptoms, and lower transmission risks.
Types of Herpes Virus
HSV-1 (Oral Herpes): Usually causes cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth and face.
HSV-2 (Ge***al Herpes): Primarily causes ge***al herpes, though HSV-1 can also cause it.
Symptoms of Herpes
Small, painful, fluid-filled blisters or open sores (ulcers).
Itching, tingling, or burning sensations around the mouth or ge****ls.
First outbreaks may include fever, headaches, and swollen lymph nodes.
Many people are asymptomatic but still contagious.
Transmission and Causes
Transmission: Skin-to-skin contact, including vaginal, a**l, and oral s*x.
Asymptomatic Shedding: The virus can be spread even when no sores are present.
Reactivation: The virus stays in the body permanently, with outbreaks triggered by stress, illness, or fatigue.
Treatment and Management
Antiviral Medication: Drugs like acyclovir can speed up healing, reduce severity, and decrease the frequency of outbreaks.
Daily Suppressive Therapy: Daily medication can significantly reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to partners.
Self-Care: Keeping the affected area clean and dry, taking warm baths, and using over-the-counter pain relievers.
