What a Proper Pig Feed Must Contain (Simple Explanation)

One of the biggest reasons pigs eat well but don’t grow well is not disease or breed, it’s poorly balanced feed.

Many farmers focus on one ingredient and forget that pigs don’t grow on ingredients, they grow on nutrients.

A proper pig feed must supply energy, protein, fibre, minerals, and vitamins, in the right balance for each growth stage. When one is missing, growth slows down no matter how much the pigs eat.

Energy is what drives weight gain. This mostly comes from maize and similar grains. Without enough energy, pigs eat a lot but still look thin.

Protein is what builds muscle, frame, and body tissue. This comes from soybean meal, full-fat soya, or GNC. When protein is low, pigs stay small, weak, and stunted even at 5–6 months.

Fibre helps digestion and gut health. Ingredients like wheat offal or corn bran help pigs utilize feed better, but too much fibre reduces growth.

Minerals and vitamins are small in quantity but critical. Premix supports bone formation, immunity, appetite, and feed conversion. No premix means slow growth, weak legs, and frequent health issues.

This is why feeding pigs only PKC, PKC with rice bran, or cassava peels leads to poor performance. PKC alone cannot supply enough energy and quality protein for fast growth.

Below is an example of what a properly balanced feed looks like, using common local ingredients 👇

Sample Feed Formula (100kg Mix)

🟢 Weaners

Maize – 45kg
Soybean meal / full-fat soya – 30kg
PKC – 15kg
Wheat offal / corn bran – 9kg
Premix – 1kg

This supports fast early growth and strong piglets.

🟢 Growers

Maize – 40kg
PKC – 30kg
Soybean meal or GNC – 20kg
Wheat offal / corn bran – 9kg
Premix – 1kg

This stage focuses on frame development and steady weight gain.

🟢 Finishers

Maize – 35kg
PKC – 40kg
GNC or soybean meal – 15kg
Wheat offal / corn bran – 9kg
Premix – 1kg

This maximizes weight gain and feed efficiency before market.

Pig farming follows a simple rule: garbage in, garbage out.
You can’t feed poorly and expect excellent results.

Two farmers can rear the same breed, but the one feeding a balanced ration will always get faster growth, heavier pigs, and better profit.

Feed determines performance.

Interesting 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Last night around 9.30pm, I went to wash my toilet.
There was no light, but the anxiety I was battling wouldn't let me sleep in peace.
There were so many what-ifs popping up in my head.
What if there's a snake hidden inside?
My anxiety can be justified because I wake up to notice the water in my toilet usually changes to a green color almost every day, so I always wash the toilet before use.
I've complained to the management of my apartment, and they said they'll look into it. They've yet to do anything, and I honestly don't know what that is or how best to manage it.
Last night, I killed two snakes in my dream and this morning I'm up checking everywhere again.
I'm so scared, I think I should go check into a hotel for maybe a day to calm this anxiety.
