To jump-start a car safely and effectively:
Preparation
1. Find a donor vehicle: A vehicle with a working battery and the same voltage system (12V).
2. Locate batteries: Identify the batteries in both vehicles and their terminals (+ and -).
3. Turn off both engines: Ensure both vehicles are in park (automatic) or neutral (manual).
Connecting Cables
1. Attach one end of the positive (red) jumper cable: To the positive terminal of the dead battery.
2. Attach the other end of the positive (red) jumper cable: To the positive terminal of the donor vehicle's battery.
3. Attach one end of the negative (black) jumper cable: To the negative terminal of the donor vehicle's battery.
4. Attach the other end of the negative (black) jumper cable*: To a metal surface on the dead vehicle's engine or frame, away from the dead battery.
Starting the Vehicle
1. Start the donor vehicle's engine: Let it run for a few minutes.
2. Try to start the dead vehicle: If it doesn't start right away, let the working vehicle's engine run for a few more minutes and try again.
Removing Cables
1. Disconnect the cables in reverse order: Remove the negative (black) cables first, then the positive (red) cables.
Safety Precautions
1. Wear protective gear: Gloves and safety glasses.
2. Ensure proper cable connection’s: Avoid short circuits.
