Here is a breakdown of the most frequent car battery issues and what causes them:

Dead Battery: Usually caused by an aging battery (typically lasting 3 to 5 years) that no longer holds a charge. It can also happen if you accidentally leave headlights or interior lights on overnight.

Corroded Terminals: A white or bluish powdery buildup on the battery's metal connectors. This restricts electrical flow, causing a weak or no-start condition. It is usually caused by escaping battery acid fumes reacting with the metal.

Parasitic Drain: Occurs when an electrical component—like a faulty alarm, stereo, or shorted wire—continues drawing power from the battery even when the engine is switched off.

Faulty Alternator: If your alternator is bad, it cannot recharge the battery while you drive. This mimics a bad battery, often resulting in dim lights and a car that repeatedly dies.

Extreme Temperatures: Heat and cold can damage battery performance. High temperatures evaporate the battery's internal fluids and accelerate internal corrosion, while freezing temperatures reduce the battery's chemical ability to generate power.

Damaged or Loose Connections: If your battery cables are loose, your car will struggle to start or maintain power. Physical damage, like a missing battery hold-down, can cause the battery to bounce and break the internal plates.

Corroded Terminals

What it is:

The metal posts (terminals) on top of your battery get covered in white or green crust.

The cause: Battery acid mixes with air and metal. This blocks electricity from flowing.

The fix: Disconnect the battery and clean the terminals with a mix of baking soda, water, and a wire brush.

Raylite AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries are premium, valve-regulated lead-acid batteries. Designed for modern vehicles with Start/Stop systems, high electrical demands, and diesel engines, they offer up to 3× the cycle life, extreme vibration resistance, and spill-proof operation compared to standard flooded batteries.

Because these batteries are sealed, they require specific charging parameters and often need to be registered to the vehicle's battery management system to avoid faults. Raylite produces an Ultimate range specifically for this technology.

Common capacities and their general specifications include:
60Ah: Typically features 680A.
70Ah: Typically features 760A.
80Ah: Typically features 800A.
92Ah: Designed for high-drain or diesel applications.

Car batteries fail in winter because cold temperatures slow down the chemical reactions required to generate power.

At freezing temperatures, a battery can lose up to 30% to 50% of its cranking capacity, making it weakest just as the cold, thickened engine oil demands maximum power to start.

The combination of reduced power and increased mechanical strain creates a perfect storm for battery failure:
Slower Chemical Reactions: Batteries produce electricity via an internal chemical process. When it gets cold, these reactions slow down, generating less electrical energy to crank the engine.

Thicker Engine Oil: Cold weather causes motor oil to become thicker and more viscous. This creates heavy resistance, requiring the starter motor to draw significantly more power from the battery.

The "Summer Damage" Effect: While winter receives the blame, the actual damage often occurs during the summer. High heat accelerates internal water loss and plate corrosion, but the battery continues to function in the warm months. When winter arrives, the reduced capacity of a summer-degraded battery is exposed.

Heavier Electrical Demands: Winter requires more use of energy-heavy accessories like heaters, defrosters, and windshield wipers. Frequent short trips in the cold prevent the alternator from fully recharging the battery to replace this high energy draw.
