General Mechanic
The General Mechanic is an experienced professional responsible for independently diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining vehicles, or. They are the primary problem-solvers in the workshop.
Job Scope (Responsibilities)
1. Diagnostics & Troubleshooting: Inspect equipment, machinery, or vehicles to identify malfunctions, wear and tear, or potential failures using diagnostic tools and visual inspections.
2. Repairs & Replacements: Repair or replace defective parts, components, or systems (e.g., engines, hydraulic systems, belts, brakes, or electrical wiring) to restore full functionality.
3. Preventative Maintenance: Perform routine and scheduled maintenance such as oil changes, fluid checks, filter replacements, and lubrication to prevent future breakdowns.
4. Testing & Quality Assurance: Test systems after repairs are completed to ensure they are operating smoothly and comply with safety and performance standards.
5. Documentation: Maintain accurate logs of all maintenance, repairs performed, parts used, and labor hours in a digital or physical ticketing system.
6. Safety & Compliance: Adhere to all workplace safety regulations (e.g., OSHA standards) and ensure hazardous materials are handled and disposed of properly.
7. Mentorship: Supervise, train, and delegate basic tasks to Assistant Mechanics or apprentices.
Criteria (Qualifications & Skills)
1. Education: High school diploma or equivalent. A degree or certification from a technical or vocational school in mechanics, automotive technology, or industrial maintenance is highly preferred.
2 .Experience: Typically 2 to 5+ years of proven hands-on experience as a mechanic in a relevant field.
3. Technical Skills: Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and advanced diagnostic equipment. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints.
4. Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills to quickly and accurately diagnose complex mechanical issues.
5. Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods, work in awkward or confined positions, and consistently lift heavy objects (up to 50–75 lbs).
Assistant Mechanic
The Assistant Mechanic is an entry-level or junior role. Their primary function is to support the General or Lead Mechanic by preparing the workspace, handling basic maintenance tasks, and learning the trade.
Job Scope (Responsibilities)
1. Direct Support: Assist senior mechanics with the assembly, disassembly, and mounting of machinery, engines, or vehicle parts.
2. Basic Maintenance: Perform fundamental and routine tasks such as changing oil, checking and topping off fluid levels, replacing air filters, and rotating tires.
3. Tool & Part Management: Retrieve, clean, and organize hand tools, power tools, and mechanical parts required for the day's repair jobs.
4. Workspace Upkeep: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment. This includes cleaning bays, sweeping up debris, and properly disposing of hazardous fluids and materials.
5. Preparation: Prep equipment or vehicles for repair (e.g., washing, lifting, securing on hoists) so they are ready for the General Mechanic to work on.
6. Inventory & Admin: Assist with unloading parts deliveries, unboxing components, and occasionally filling out basic service reports or administrative forms.
Criteria (Qualifications & Skills)
7. Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Enrollment in or recent completion of a vocational training program in mechanics is a strong plus.
8. Experience: 0 to 2 years of experience. This is often an apprenticeship or entry-level role.
9. Technical Knowledge: Basic familiarity with common hand and power tools, and a foundational understanding of mechanical concepts.
10. Willingness to Learn: A strong desire to learn the trade, take direction from senior mechanics, and ask questions when unsure.
11. Physical Stamina: Ability to work in physical environments that may involve extreme temperatures, grease, noise, and heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs).
12. Soft Skills: Good communication skills, punctuality, and the ability to work well within a fast-paced team environment.
