Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD unveiled its new Blade Battery 2.0, which the company says can charge significantly faster than existing EV batteries.

The battery can charge from 10% to 70% in about 5 minutes and reach 97% in about 9 minutes, according to BYD.

Even in temperatures as low as minus 30°C, the battery can charge from 20% to 97% in around 12 minutes, the company said.

BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu said faster charging is key to addressing range anxiety, rather than relying solely on larger batteries or more stations.

The company plans to build about 20,000 flash-charging stations across China with peak charging output of up to 1,500 kW.

In a historic shift for the automotive industry, the Chinese manufacturer BYD officially surpassed Ford in global vehicle sales for the first time in 2025. Recent financial reports confirm that BYD delivered 4.6 million vehicles last year, climbing to the number six spot in global rankings while Ford’s sales slipped to approximately 4.4 million units. This milestone is especially significant because BYD reached these record-breaking numbers exclusively with plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles. Meanwhile, Ford reported its biggest annual loss since the 2008 financial crisis, including a $4.8 billion deficit in its electric vehicle division. Just five years ago, Ford sold roughly five times as many cars as its Chinese rival, but BYD’s aggressive international expansion has now effectively reversed that ranking.
