Teased last week, the new third-generation Lexus GX has finally been unveiled in Malaysia, debuting on the local website some two years after having its international premiere. The premium off-roader, built on the bones of the newest Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, is a more luxury take on the beloved mid-sized 4ร4 and is priced to fit.
The more durable GX550 Overtrail, priced at RM780,000, and the elegant GX550 Luxury+, priced at an astounding RM830,000, are the two models available. Both costs include a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty and are on-the-road without insurance.
Despite its high cost, the GX at least has a large, multi-cylinder engine. The petrol GX550 is powered by a 3.5-liter V35A-FTS twin-turbo V6 that produces 354 PS between 4,800 and 5,200 rpm and 650 Nm of torque between 2,000 and 3,600 rpm, while the Prado is only offered with four-cylinder mills.
With a ten-speed automatic transmission and a full-time all-wheel drive system, this leviathan travels from zero to 100 km/h in seven seconds flat, however its peak speed is limited at a puny 175 km/h. According to the NEDC cycle, it burns 12.3 gallons of fuel every 100 kilometers.
The new GX, which is based on the ladder frame version of the Toyota New Global Architecture (GA-F), has improved suspension geometry for more stable handling in addition to increased body rigidity for a quieter, more comfortable ride and sharper steering feelโthe latter in conjunction with the use of electric power steering. Coil springs are installed throughout the vehicle, which is suspended by double wishbones at the front and a solid axle with four links at the back.
Depending on the variation selected, different off-road gear is used. With a locking rear differential, a Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) system with Dirt, Sand, Mud, and Rocks modes, a new Auto setting, and Crawl Control off-road cruise control, the Overtrail is, as its name implies, the most prepared vehicle for difficult situations.
Also debuting on the Overtrail is an Electronic-Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS) that can decouple the anti-roll bars automatically based on the terrain, enhancing wheel articulation. A Torsen limited-slip center differential, a traditional drive mode selector, and adaptive dampers replace all of that in the Luxury+.
Both models come with a selectable low-range gearbox and approach, break-over and departure angles of 26 degrees, 23 degrees and 23 degrees respectively. Towing capacity is set as 3,130 kg for the Luxury+ and 3,500 kg for the Overtrail.
With dimensions of 4,950 mm in length, 1,980 mm in width, and 1,865 mm in height, the GX is five millimeters shorter and 25 mm longer, but it maintains the same breadth and 2,850 mm wheelbase. The Overtrail is 20 mm wider (exactly two metres) and 25 mm taller, thanks to bigger front and rear tracks and taller roof rails.
Moving on to the back, you'll notice the now-common Lexus lettering, U-shaped full-width LED taillights, and a motorized tailgate with a pop-out windshield (the Luxury+ has hands-free operation). The Luxury+ rides on enormous 22-inch dark grey multi-spoke alloy wheels, while the Overtrail switches these out for 18-inch matte grey alloys shod in knobbly all-terrain rubber.
Other standard features include an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, customizable ambient lighting, active noise cancellation and a ten-speaker Pioneer sound system, while the Luxury+ adds a panoramic glass roof, a digital rear-view mirror and a 23-speaker Mark Levinson Premium system.
Safety-wise, the GX comes as standard with seven airbags (including a centre airbag) and a full suite of Lexus Safety System+ driver assists, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, parking AEB, traffic sign recognition, a door opening warning, pedal misapplication control and auto high beam.
The Luxury+ throws on adaptive high beam through Lexusโ distinctive BladeScan headlamps, while the Overtrail responds with hill descent control and augments the base 360-degree camera system with an off-road-focused Multi-Terrain Monitor (MTM). This adds a lower-mounted front camera and a transparency view.
