The previous dry cleaner made a mistake with water control and didn't dry the car properly. There's a thick layer of sound-absorbing foam under the carpet, like a sponge pad. Water gets in, the surface looks dry, but when you press down, it's all soaked. If left in the car for two or three days, it will become severely moldy and smelly.
Simply spraying perfume or sunbathing the surface won't solve the problem; the odor is at the bottom. Our current approach is to remove the entire carpet, thoroughly wash, dry, and bake the foam that's soaked in moldy wastewater. At the same time, we'll do a deep disinfection of the car floor and the air inside. It's a bit more troublesome, but this is the only way to completely eliminate the odor and prevent the floor from rusting and growing bacteria."
