WHAT TYPES OF CAR ALARM SHOULD YOU CONSIDER FOR YOUR VEHICLE?
Naturally, you want to make sure that your vehicle is kept as safe as possible whether it’s on the street in front of your house, or if it’s in a parking lot while you are at work, or anywhere else. However, with the high rate of car theft today, the danger to your vehicles is very real.
Having a quality car alarm will help to make things a bit safer. Of course, you’ll find that there are so many different types of car alarm on the market today that it can be difficult to know which to choose.
Below, we’ll be looking at some of the major types of alarms that are available. Having a basic understanding of the different types of alarms should make it easier for you to determine which options are best for you.
Audible Alarm Systems
When you think about car alarms, this is likely the first thing that comes to mind. These are the alarms that will often be preinstalled when you buy a new vehicle, or even when you get a used vehicle from the past couple of years. These types of alarms have been used for many years, which is both good and bad.
The good part is that most people understand how to use them and arm them. They are simple. When someone tries to break into the car, they will sound a loud alarm, and sometimes, the lights will start to flash. However, there are some drawbacks, as well. You’ll find that with this car alarm, many people simply ignore them when they hear them. This is because most people have seen so many false alarms over the years that they’ve become numb to the sound.
Still, the sound can scare off some thieves. This could still be a good type of alarm to consider. However, it might not be the only method of security you’ll want to use, as we’ll discuss below.
Silent Alarm Systems
Another option to consider is a silent car alarm. These do not cause any sound that the thieves will hear. However, the owner will be alerted to the break-in. This could be a preferable type of alarm in some situations. Silent alarms are not always a solution that everyone will be comfortable using because they prefer the sound that could scare a thief away. Whether you choose this option will depend on your preferences.
Immobilizing Alarm Systems
Another type of alarm system that is used today will not allow the vehicle to start unless the keys are near the car. This can sometimes stop thieves before they get started with stealing the vehicle. It could be a good option to consider.
Two Way Remote System
A more advanced car alarm system is a two-way remote car alarm. These systems provide two-way communication between the alarm and the remote on a driver’s key ring. Some more technologically advanced systems will even have small LCD screens on the remote. Basic, older systems just set off an audible alarm and flash the vehicle’s lights to ward off potential car thieves (or scare cats who have set the alarm off by mistake).
Two-way remote alarms, however, can communicate their status to the owner sometimes up to a mile away. This communication is not limited to a simple report that the alarm has been activated, either. It can include notifying the owner if someone breaks into the car or even if the alarm goes off for any reason. The remotes vibrate to alert the car owner of any intrusion on the vehicle.
Passive and Active Alarm Systems
The terms passive and active are often associated with audible or silent car alarm system. This simply refers to how the alarms are activated and deactivated.
With a passive alarm, the car will automatically activate the alarm when the car is turned off and the doors are locked. This helps to reduce the risk of forgetting to set your alarm.
The driver will have to unlock the doors to deactivate the alarm.
With an active alarm, you’ll have to press a button, often on your key remote, to activate and deactivate the car alarm. If you have an active alarm, you have to be very cognizant of setting your alarm each time that you leave your vehicle. If you don’t, anyone can just open up the doors and get inside.
GPS Car Tracking Systems
In addition to the usual car alarms, many people today are considering these trackers that use the Global Positioning System. The trackers will make it possible to locate your vehicle in real-time or near real-time no matter where it might be in the world. This can help to provide a speedy recovery in the event it’s stolen.
With some of the options on the market, you can also get alerts via SMS on your phone or notifications via the internet or app when someone tries to break into your car similar to a silent alarm.
For example, if there are unusual vibrations, such as those made by prying tools, you will receive an alert. If the engine starts or the vehicle moves without you in the car, you will get an alert, as well. We will discuss more in detail about how GPS car tracking system works in our next posts.
Consider Getting More than One Option
Earlier, we mentioned that you might want to add multiple methods of security to your vehicle. This can be a good option for those who want the best possible security for their vehicle. For example, having an audible alarm or an immobilizer alarm coupled with a GPS Tracker will provide a safer environment for your car.
Even if a thief were to get past the audible car alarm, you would still know when the vehicle is started and moved, and you can track the location.
You can even switch it off remotely (immobilize) by just sending an SMS via your phone. This can make recovering the vehicle faster and easier.
You should also consider some other basic security methods to use, too. For example, be wary of where you are parking.
Park under lights and close to establishments. Park in your garage if you have one. Set up a security camera outside of your home to deter thieves even further. Do whatever you can to keep your car safe.
Take the time to look at some of the various options available.
