Coolant or Water? Why you Should Stop Putting Water in the Radiator Instead of Coolant.

While driving this morning, I saw a man off the road adding water into the radiator for cooling. Water is not the best when it comes to cooling your engine. If you want to know more, read this article as I will address the reasons why you should stay away from such practice.

It is highly advisable that you do not put water into the radiator for cooling, except in some circumstances which I will address in the article.

Disadvantages of Water in Your Radiator
1. Water has a lower boiling point than coolant
The operating temperature of a vehicle’s engine is higher than the boiling point temperature of pure water. This will result in your engine overheating and may cause the engine block to crack.
2. Stone build-up in the cooling system
Dissolved mineral sediments from water will form stones and clog the coolant channels in the engine and the radiator thereby exacerbating cooling problems.
3. Water pump damage
Water has worse lubricant properties than coolant. This will result in the water pump wearing out quicker because of less lubrication. The stones mentioned above cause damage to the water pump blades.
4. Rust developing in the engine
Water will result in rusting of radiator and engine parts. Even if you put clean water, it is an enabler of rust in the engine.

When can you put Water in the Radiator

You should put water in the radiator for emergency use only. In a situation where coolant is very low in the tank, you can add water and drive for a short distance. You should flush out the water before filling the cooling system with coolant. If you live in regions where winter temperatures get below freezing point, you should flush out the water before the engine completely cools down.
