Mauritius has two kinds of roads — the ones on the map, and the ones locals actually use. Tight village lanes in Chamarel, the switchbacks up to Trou aux Cerfs, the sandy track down to a beach that isn't in any guidebook. Half the island's best moments happen on roads a normal car would think twice about.
A solo traveller took our Suzuki Jimny out last week with nothing but a rough idea and a full day. He wound through the hills above Tamarin, stopped wherever the view told him to, then found a dirt track down toward Case Noyale that led to an empty stretch of coast — no crowds, no signage, just him, the Jimny, and the Indian Ocean. On the way back, he cut through backroads near Rivière Noire that shaved twenty minutes off the GPS route and gave him a better story than the beach did.

Past the resorts, past the paved coast, there's a version of Mauritius most visitors never see — the red dirt tracks up toward Black River Gorges, the volcanic trails near Chamarel, the backroads that cut through sugarcane fields where the tar just... stops.
A family rented our Jeep Wrangler Sahara last month for exactly that kind of day. They started at Chamarel, climbing up past the Seven Coloured Earths, engine growling over the loose gravel. From the viewpoint at Gorges Noires, they could see half the island laid out below — canopy, coastline, cloud shadow moving across it all. Then down toward Baie du Cap, top off, doors off, salt air replacing the highland cool. By evening they were parked right on the sand at Le Morne, watching the sun drop behind the mountain that gives the whole peninsula its name.
