Do you know how to check the age of your tires?
You should always keep an eye on the age of your tires: the tyre age is stamped on the side wall of the tyre as a four-digit DOT number. If, for example, the number 4020 appears after ‘DOT’ and the two subsequent four-digit letter combinations, this means that the tire was produced in the 40th calendar week of the year 20 (i.e. 2020).💡
There is no legal basis for the age of tires – except for trailers with a 100 km/h approval, where the tires may be a maximum of 6 years old! But what applies to new tires that have been in storage for a long time? Provided that they have been stored properly and professionally, a tire is considered to be brand new up to 3 years old and new up to a maximum of 5 years old. If you buy and fit unused tires that are no more than five years old, there is no technical reason not to do so. However, they will then only have a limited service life. If in doubt, always ask your tire dealer!
