An automatic transmission vehicle refers to a car that has an auto gearbox and does not require the driver to shift gears manually.
Here are some tips for beginners on how to drive an automatic transmission car:
Step 1: Get familiar with the gear shifter: Most automatic cars have a PRNDL shifter with Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and Low gears. Understand what each gear does.
Step 2: Start in Park: When you get into the car, make sure the shifter is in Park before turning on the ignition. This locks the wheels from moving.
Step 2: Switch to Reverse: With your foot on the brake, move the shifter to Reverse. Check your mirrors and look over your shoulder before slowly releasing the brake to back up.
Step 3: Move to Drive: Once the car is moving forward at a slow speed, move the shifter to Drive. Drive is used for normal forward driving.
Step 4: Give it gas lightly: Gradually press down on the accelerator pedal to get the car moving. Don't stomp on it abruptly or you can jerk forward suddenly. Accelerate gently.
Step 5: Brake early when stopping: Leave plenty of stopping distance from the car in front of you. Press the brake pedal down gradually to come to a smooth stop.
Step 6: Stop fully before shifting: Before moving the shifter from Drive to Reverse, Park or any other gear, come to a complete stop with your foot firmly on the brake pedal.
Please Note:
Use your turn signals: Always use turn signals when changing lanes or making a turn. Get in the habit of turning them on before you turn the wheel.
2. Don't ride the brakes - Don't drive with your foot resting lightly on the brake pedal as that causes unnecessary brake wear and fuel waste.
Follow these tips and drive slowly and carefully as you gain experience driving an automatic transmission car.
