At the heart of Domus Zamittello, the courtyard was always intended to be enjoyed open to the sky.

Its fully retractable skylight allows us to bring back that al fresco character, while naturally ventilating the space and helping to balance warm and cool air throughout the day.

Most of what happens in this hotel happens before you wake up.

Padam and Clarence begin their day early. By the time the first guests come down to breakfast, the corridors are already done. By check-out, the suites are prepared for arrival. The rhythm of the house is carried by people who are, by design, invisible when they are working.

We take the preparation of each room seriously. The quality of the linen. The exact placement of things. The small choices that determine whether a room feels right the moment you return to it, without you being able to say why. These details do not maintain themselves. They are the result of people who do the same things, correctly, every single day.

In August, Malta is in festa season. It has been since June, but August is when it reaches its fullest expression.

Across the island, parish churches that have stood for centuries fill the surrounding streets with lights. The banda’s march & the fireworks begin at dusk. The procession of the patron saint, carried on the shoulders of parishioners, sometimes for hours, moves through streets so narrow that the statue must be tilted to pass.

Every village has its own festa. Every village believes its own to be the finest. We keep a list of which feasts are happening nearest to Valletta on any given August weekend, and which ones we would not miss ourselves. Ask at the front desk. The car can be arranged. The evenings always exceed expectations.

Mdina: twenty minutes by car. Several centuries in either direction. The Silent City, Malta’s former capital, inhabited for more than four thousand years, sits inland, just twenty minutes from our door on Republic Street.

Go early. Before the day coaches arrive and the narrow streets fill, Mdina belongs entirely to those who know to arrive first. Walk through the main gate, past the cathedral, to Fontanella for a coffee on the bastion walls. Look out over the valley to the south, and beyond it, the sea.

Return for lunch in Valletta. This is one of the rhythms we recommend to anyone staying more than two nights.

There is no perfect way to spend a day in Valletta. But if you asked us, this is how we would do it.

Start the day slowly. Breakfast in bed, fresh coffee, and nowhere to be just yet. Sometimes, the best mornings are the ones you don’t rush.

A morning workout, but with a little history. Our gym is housed within the Palazzo’s original well, thoughtfully restored into a space that’s unlike any other.

Just a short stroll from the hotel, the Upper Barrakka Gardens offer some of the most beautiful views across the Grand Harbour. A peaceful corner of Valletta that’s always worth a visit.

No day in Valletta is complete without a stop at Caffè Cordina. Order their famous round pastizzi and enjoy an espresso at the bar, just as the locals do.

Step inside one of Valletta’s most beautiful historic buildings. The National Library is free to visit and offers a quiet escape into centuries of Maltese history.

After an afternoon exploring the city, head back to Domus Zamittello for a well-earned rest. The perfect excuse to slow down before the evening begins.

Golden hour calls for an aperitivo. Settle into our terrace with your favourite drink and watch the city ease into the evening.

End the day at one of Valletta’s most beloved restaurants. Rubino is a local favourite, serving timeless Maltese and Mediterranean dishes in a charming, intimate setting.

Sir Giuseppe Nicola Zamitt K.C.M.G. acquired Casa Pensa, this building, in 1805, after the knights of the Order of St John had been evicted and the island had passed to British hands.

He was knighted in 1818, became a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George, a respected judge, and, an unusual distinction, Pro-Secretary to Samuel Taylor Coleridge during the poet’s time as British Civil Commissioner of Malta.

He gave the building his name: Palazzo Zamittello.

His descendants held the property for nine generations. In 2013, Count Alfred Manduca, his heir, began the restoration that led to Domus Zamittello opening in February 2018.
