1955 Belgian Grand Prix. Lancia D50. Eugenio Castellotti
In the wake of the tragic death of lead driver Ascari, Lancia announced the immediate disbandment of the team. At the championship race held at Spa just ten days later, Lancia driver Castellotti, who had finished a strong second in Monte Carlo, persuaded the team to allow him to race as a private entrant and sensationally took pole position. The race itself turned into a high-speed procession, Fangio in the Mercedes-Benz leading all the way to win from team mate Moss. Driving the sole Lancia, Castellotti put on a fine display for the beleaguered team, second through Eau Rouge on lap 1 and maintaining a robust third place ahead of Farina’s Ferrari. But at half-distance a split gearbox ended his race, Farina finishing a distant third. It was the fourth and final race for Lancia.
