Sri Lanka has been recognized as the world’s fastest-growing wellness travel destination for 2026, recording an impressive 100% increase in global demand. The figures, highlighted by TimeOut Asia and based on the latest State of Retreats 2026 Report by BookRetreats.com, reflect the country’s rising popularity among wellness-focused travellers.
The report points to a major shift in travel preferences, with more people choosing holidays that prioritize health, relaxation, mindfulness, and personal well-being over traditional sightseeing experiences.
A survey of 1,040 travellers in the United States found that 49% intend to spend on wellness retreats in 2026, ranking them above spa treatments, dietary supplements, and even gym memberships.
This growing interest aligns with projections from the Global Wellness Institute, which estimates that the global wellness tourism market will reach US$1.4 trillion by 2027, highlighting the sector’s rapid expansion.
Sri Lanka secured the top position after recording the highest year-on-year growth in wellness travel interest on the BookRetreats.com platform.
Experts attribute this success to the island’s long-established reputation for holistic healing, particularly its authentic, doctor-led Ayurvedic traditions that have been practiced for over 2,000 years, offering visitors a truly immersive wellness experience.
The country’s affordability has also strengthened its appeal, with three- to four-day wellness retreats starting at around US$372.18, making Sri Lanka a competitive and accessible choice among leading wellness destinations worldwide.
