New Vehicle Import Tax Update – Sri Lanka 🇱🇰

The government has introduced an additional 50% surcharge on the existing customs import duty for vehicles.

Currently, vehicle imports are charged a 30% customs duty. From today (16th), an extra 50% tax will be added on top of that duty for a period of 3 months.

✅ Vehicles with Letters of Credit (LCs) opened on or before 15th May will NOT be affected by this new surcharge.

This new tax will increase the overall import cost of vehicles.

රජය විසින් වාහන ආනයනය සඳහා දැනට පවතින රෙගු බද්ද මත අමතර 50%ක surcharge බද්දක් හඳුන්වා දී ඇත.

දැනට වාහන සඳහා අය කරන 30% රෙගු බද්ද මත මෙම අමතර බද්ද අද (16) සිට මාස 3ක කාලයක් සඳහා ක්‍රියාත්මක වේ.

✅ 2026 මැයි 15 වනදාට පෙර LC (නයවර ලිපි) විවෘත කළ වාහන සඳහා මෙම අමතර බද්ද අදාළ නොවේ.

මෙම වෙනස හේතුවෙන් වාහන ආනයන මුළු වියදම වැඩි වනු ඇත.

A 2.5% Social Security Contribution Levy (SSCL) is now applied to all vehicle imports, effective 1st May 2026.

This levy is calculated using the same tax base used for VAT calculation, which increases the overall duty payable.

Estimated increase in total duty for a few selected models:

* 660cc Kei cars: approx. Rs. 120,000 – 180,000
* Toyota Raize: approx. Rs. 200,000
* Toyota Yaris Cross / Honda Vezel: approx. Rs. 300,000 – 400,000

This change will directly affect the final price of imported vehicles.
