කාල් බෙන්ස් විසින් නිපදවන ලද පළමු ස්ථාවර පෙට්‍රල් එන්ජිම එක් සිලින්ඩර දෙකකින් යුත් ඒකකයක් වන අතර එය 1879 අලුත් අවුරුදු දිනයේදී ප්‍රථම වරට ක්‍රියාත්මක විය. මෙම එන්ජිම සමඟ බෙන්ස් වාණිජමය වශයෙන් කෙතරම් සාර්ථක වීද යත් ඔහුගේ සිහිනය සඳහා වැඩි කාලයක් කැප කිරීමට ඔහුට හැකි විය චැසි සහ එන්ජිම තනි ඒකකයක් සෑදූ පෙට්රල් එන්ජිමකින් බල ගැන්වෙන සැහැල්ලු කාරයක් නිර්මාණය කිරීම.
The first stationary gasoline engine developed by Carl Benz was a one-cylinder two-stroke unit which ran for the first time on New Year’s Eve 1879. Benz had so much commercial success with this engine that he was able to devote more time to his dream of creating a lightweight car powered by a gasoline engine, in which the chassis and engine formed a single unit.

At the request of French military officials, French inventor and fortifications expert Nicholas Cugnot designed and built the first self-propelled carriage. The first prototype was built in 1769. Designed to tow artillery to the battlefront, its speed was set at three miles per hour so that soldiers could keep pace with it. It could pull a load of five tons and could operate for one hour and fifteen minutes before stopping. The only known example, pictured above, is on display at the Musee des Arts et Metiers in Paris, France.
