Fuel + Heat + Oxygen = Fire Triangle
A basic air conditioner (AC) service involves turning off the power, cleaning or replacing the filters, and clearing dust from the internal and external coils.
Follow these simple steps to service a standard split or room AC
Step 1:
Turn Off the Power
Turn off the AC and unplug the power cord or trip the circuit breaker.
Never work on a live electrical machine.
Step 2:
Clean the Air Filters
Open the front panel of the indoor unit.
Pull out the mesh air filters and any small bacteria filters gently.
Wash them with tap water and mild soap if they are very greasy or dusty.
Let them dry completely before putting them back.
Step 3:
Clean the Evaporator Coils and Fins
Look at the exposed metal fins behind the filters.
Use a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner to remove loose dust.
Be very careful because the aluminum fins bend easily and are sharp.
You can spray a specialized foaming AC cleaner on the fins if they are dirty.
Step 4:
Clear the Drain Pipe
Check the condensate drain line attached to the indoor unit.
Flush the drain pipe with water or a vinegar mix to clear blockages and prevent indoor water leaks.
Step 5:
Clean the Outdoor Unit
Clear away any leaves, dirt, or plants surrounding the outdoor compressor unit.
Use a soft brush or low-pressure water hose to clean the outer condenser fins.
Check the refrigerant pipe insulation to see if it needs repair or replacement.
Step 6:
Reassemble and Test
Put the dry filters back into the indoor unit and close the front cover.
Wipe the outside of the machine with a clean cloth.
Plug the AC back in or turn the breaker on.
Run the unit on cool mode for 15 minutes to check for normal airflow and proper cooling.
