Kolwezi is a city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is the capital of Lualaba Province and is located in the south of the country. Kolwezi is an important mining center for copper and cobalt. There are also uranium, radium, oxide ores, and lime deposits. The Musonoi mine is a set of open-cut pits near Kolwezi from which copper and other metals have been extracted since the 1940s. The nearby Lake Nzilo was created by damming the Lualaba River to provide a source of hydroelectric power and a reservoir of water for the mining activities.
Kolwezi was founded in 1937 by the Belgian mining company Union Minière du Haut Katanga (UMHK). The city developed as a series of scattered neighborhoods, like other segregationist cities in Haut-Katanga and colonial Southern Africa. With a decision-making and residential center for European executives, in the Southeast the Customary Center, for the local population and several planned cities (Kolwezi created in 1937, Musonoï in 1945, UZK in 1953, Ruwe in 1956, Luilu in 1958 and Kapata in 1962) for the working population close to the UMHK quarries and factories.
Kolwezi is located near the Zilo Gorges of the Lualaba River (a tributary of the Congo) on the Lubumbashi-Lobito road and rail line and also has air transport facilities to Lubumbashi.
