Quick overview of the Porsche DoppellKupplungSgetriebe (PDK) Gearbox.
The mouthful word you avoided simply translates to Double-Clutch Transmission (DCT). The PDK is a 7 Speed DCT gearbox that has been used by Porsche for a very long time.
It was developed in the 80s but started becoming standard in Porsche cars from 2009. The Porsche Panamera was in fact the first Porsche standard with the PDK in 2009. The gearbox has established itself as a high performance unit for the automaker & has been used in the 911, 718 Cayman & The Macan Turbo.
Its popularity is based on the sporty, intelligent, agile & dynamic driving experience it offers. Like any other DCT, it has two clutches, one engages the Reverse, 1,3,5 & 7th gears while the other one purely engages even numbered gears.
Furthermore, it offers manual modes that can be engaged using the shifting stick or the paddle shifters for drivers who want to have their say on driving inputs. The shifting speeds are computer calibrated and as a result, too quick to even notice because it doesn't interrupt power delivery at all. You can easily call it the smoothest gearbox unit in production & walk away with it.
On reliability, it is a very decent box that only requires regular light service done on time with stuff like hydraulic fluid calibration & regular oil changes. Porsche's suggestion for major service intervals is at about 38,000 Km but you can do it earlier than that, it is healthier for the clutches.
