The air filter is the only barrier between your engine internals and everything suspended in the air outside your vehicle.
Dust. Sand. Pollen. Carbon particles from traffic. Road debris fine enough to float. All of it passes through your air intake every second the engine runs — and the air filter is what decides how much of it reaches your cylinders, your pistons, and the precision surfaces inside your engine that tolerate almost nothing.
A new air filter flows freely and captures contaminants efficiently. As it fills, restriction builds. The engine management system compensates for reduced airflow by adjusting fuel delivery — but there is a limit to how far the system can correct for a severely restricted intake before the compensation itself becomes a problem. Beyond that limit the engine runs rich, fuel consumption rises, throttle response dulls, and power delivery under load feels noticeably softer than a clean filter would produce.
The damage from a neglected air filter is not dramatic. It is the accumulation of fine particles that pass through a compromised filter element over thousands of kilometres — microscopic abrasion on cylinder walls that shortens engine life in ways that never appear on a single diagnostic report but show up years later as an engine that burns oil, loses compression, and needs rebuilding before it should.
Driving on dusty roads, unpaved surfaces, or in heavy traffic accelerates filter loading significantly compared to highway driving in clean air.

The oil filter is the one filter every driver knows exists. It is also the one most often left in place during an oil change without anyone mentioning it.
Fresh engine oil enters a system already contaminated by the filter from the previous service interval — a filter saturated with metal particles, carbon deposits, and combustion byproducts that the previous oil charge suspended and carried to the filter over thousands of kilometres of use. The new oil picks up what the old filter can no longer hold within minutes of the first cold start.
The filter contains two valves that most drivers have never heard of — and both of them matter more than the filter media itself in specific situations.
The anti-drain back valve prevents oil from draining out of the filter housing when the engine is switched off. Without it the filter empties by gravity overnight and the engine runs without oil pressure for the seconds it takes the pump to refill an empty filter on the next cold start. Those seconds of dry running happen on the bearings and camshaft surfaces that need oil pressure most — every single morning, on every cold start, for the life of the vehicle. A cheap filter with a poor anti-drain back valve causes this damage silently and consistently.
The bypass valve opens when the filter media becomes too restricted to pass oil at sufficient flow rate — allowing unfiltered oil to circulate rather than starving the engine completely. It is a failsafe, not a feature. An engine running on bypassed oil is circulating everything the filter was supposed to capture directly through its most sensitive components.
The filter is changed with every oil service. The oil is only as clean as the filter it passes through.

Filters are the most unglamorous components on any vehicle. They don't move, they don't make noise, they don't wear in any way the driver can feel, and they cost almost nothing compared to everything they protect. Which is exactly why they are the most consistently neglected service item across every make, every model, and every maintenance schedule.
A filter has one job — keep contaminants out of a system that cannot tolerate them. The precision tolerances inside an engine, a fuel injector, a gearbox, or an air conditioning system are measured in microns. Particles invisible to the naked eye are large enough to score bearing surfaces, block injector nozzles, and accelerate wear in ways that show up thousands of kilometres later as failures nobody connects back to a filter that was never changed.
The filter doesn't fail dramatically. It fills slowly, restricts flow gradually, and compromises the system it protects incrementally — until the day the restriction becomes severe enough to trigger a symptom, by which point the damage has already been accumulating for months.
Every filter on your vehicle has a service interval for a reason. That interval is not a manufacturer's attempt to sell more filters — it is the point beyond which the filter's ability to protect the system it serves is compromised enough to matter.

Before It Was In Your Car — Power Steering Part 1.

In 1951 a Chrysler engineer tried to sell America on the idea that driving should require less effort.
The response was not what he expected.
Power steering existed as a concept long before it existed as a product. The physics were understood — use hydraulic pressure to assist the mechanical effort of turning a steering rack, reducing the force a driver needed to apply to the wheel, particularly at low speeds and during parking where steering effort peaked. The engineering was not simple but it was not mysterious either.
The problem was convincing people it was necessary.
Driving in the late 1940s and early 1950s required physical effort that drivers accepted as simply part of operating a vehicle. Heavy steering was not considered a flaw — it was considered feedback. The resistance in the wheel told you what the tyres were doing, how much grip was available, and how hard the front end was working. Experienced drivers valued that connection and were deeply suspicious of anything that might reduce or mask it.
The automotive press called it unnecessary. Driving enthusiasts called it dangerous — a system that disconnected the driver from the road and created false confidence in conditions where real feedback mattered most.
Chrysler fitted power steering to the 1951 Chrysler Imperial anyway and offered it as an option called Hydraguide.
The first drivers who tried it on a parking manoeuvre never went back.

There is a fluid in your car that degrades silently, produces no warning light, and announces its failure through a smell most drivers have never connected to a maintenance item.
Brake fluid.
Old brake fluid doesn't just lose its effectiveness quietly — it eventually makes itself known through a burning smell after hard or repeated braking. The smell is the fluid reaching temperatures it was never designed to handle because its boiling point has dropped with moisture absorption over years of service.
Most drivers smell it, assume something is burning externally, and drive on. The pedal still works. The car still stops. Nothing visible has changed.

Doesn't matter if it's a matatu in Nairobi, a danfo in Lagos, a combi in Johannesburg, or a taxi in Accra — this same story is playing out on roads across the continent right now. And most people never catch it, because the problem isn't something you can see from the outside.

Here's what was actually inside this one 👇

A real friction compound is a dense, engineered mix — bonded fibers, resin, and filler, built to grip consistently under heat. This one was mostly compressed sawdust and cheap resin. It looked like a brake pad. It was not built like one.

Under a few hard stops, it "glazed" — the surface went shiny and hard, and stopped gripping the rotor properly. That's the exact moment a driver presses the pedal and the car takes longer to stop than it should. Sometimes far longer.

This isn't a one-batch problem. It's a supply chain problem playing out from Lagos to Nairobi to Johannesburg — wherever counterfeit parts move faster than the checks meant to catch them.

3 questions to ask before you buy your next brake pad, wherever you are in Africa:
1️⃣ Does the friction material have a visible, consistent texture — or does it look smooth/painted?
2️⃣ Is there a batch number or manufacturer stamp on the backing plate, and does the seller actually know the brand's country of manufacture?
3️⃣ Does it weigh what it should? Counterfeits are almost always noticeably lighter than genuine pads of the same size.

If a seller can't answer these, that's your answer.
