If you own a car, please read this. And share π
Official name : Catalytic converter
Popular Grogon Name : 'Maffra'
A lot has been said about this particular part. People have been sold fear in regards to this part. Some mechanics and port crooks have made clients suffer, clients too cautious have refused anything to do with the Cat Converter repairs.
Well, maybe a little explanation on what it is and how to go about it should there be problems arising from it.
The Cat is basically an exhaust gas filter or in chemistry terms functions by catalysing a redox reaction. As with any part, it has its shell life of between 5-10years after which it basically clogs from the carbon build up. This leads to lack of power, misfires, engine stall etc
Ideally, you're supposed to replace the cat but this is Kenya and Kenya is us. Where do you get a brand new Cat? Very few clients are able to afford them of which most are imported on request. If you get a foreign used how sure are you it will serve you for a few years before blocking yet again?
So what do we do? For most cars, we will drill a hole through instead of clearing it all. Clearing it all has the car making a very annoying noise(Subaru noise, most clients claim π€£π€£π€£) . For most modern cars the check engine will come on. And this is where it gets interesting. I know mechanics tampering with the check engine (kudunga) which is truly unethical then there's me and trusted engineers that I can vouch for that will do a remap of the Engine Control Unit. At a cost of between 15k-60k depending on the car.
For some diesel engines, we carry out what we call a DPF regeneration. Sometimes it works for a few months, sometimes it doesn't. Same remap is done or an emulator fitted. I could go on but I'm not big on writing without getting technical( Haven't even mentioned AdBlue π
) . This is as layman as I could get. The Exhaust System done by a professional shouldn't be a problem. Also, all this might change with KEBS and Nema emissions control soon to be in effect. There's a gadget I want to test and see whether I can recommend
