HAS THE LAST OF THE REMAINING HEARTS BROUGHT THE CAT BACK TO LIFE?
5th of March 2024 served as an important date in the local trucking scene after Isuzu East Africa announced that it had secured the distribution rights for UD trucks. This granted them the responsibility to assemble, sell and provide aftersales support UD trucks in the East African region.
In recent months, Isuzu East Africa has been on the run to educate their dealers on the entire UD product range. Will that catapult the UD trucks sales of models like the Quester GWE 410 in a segment dominated by Scania and Mercedes benz; given that IEA has had a market dominance in the light and medium duty trucks category for the longest time?
Well, let's wait and see how all this turns out after the whole production chain is fully set up.

IS ISUZU FRR90 A KILLER TRUCK?
FRR90 is one of 7th generation medium duty trucks made by ISUZU to succeed the 6th gen FRR33. It comes with the 4HK1-TCC power plant which supersedes the 6HH1 engine on the FRR33.The 4HK1 is 4cylinder mill with a displacement of 5193cc and is turbocharged unlike the predecessor which came with a 6cylinder 8226cc naturally aspirated engine. This update makes the FRR90 swift enough to haul a bigger payload hence the name “miondoko” in the local trucking scene.
They say numbers don’t lie. A credible source of information has it that most accident repairs booked in by the local Isuzu dealers are FRR90’s.Well, does this mean that the truck is a widow maker or is it that the drivers don’t handle it with caution?
Frr90 has been in production worldwide for the last 7 years and it has not received any kind of recalls for having a poor braking system. Then how comes it’s labeled a killer truck in Kenya? That alone is a proof enough that this is a driver related issue. The ‘slayqueen’ comes with a huge punch in terms of torque and horsepower which if not well handled can be fatal.
Great power comes with great responsibility .The issue with most drivers is that they’ll overload the truck with 11+ tonnes , drive it like a formula 1 in the name of ‘miondoko’ and expect it to brake like a Porsche. That can’t happen on earth. Always make sure that you’re on the right gear, use the exhaust brake (“freno”) with the aid of engine braking, and finally press the primary brake pedal if necessary. It’s also good to note that the truck uses air over hydraulic braking system which mean that the foot valve plays a critical role in braking. Always make sure that you drain the pressure tanks on a daily basis to prevent moisture from getting into the system rendering it less effective. Isuzu however has incorporated an air drier in the newer versions of the truck, to counter the negligence of drivers that ignore basic routine checks.
Let’s always take caution on these roads for you’ve got only one life to live. Remember that we can breathe life again onto a damaged truck but not your life. Safe travel as you make your deliveries.

ISUZU'S BLUEPOWER EXPLAINED
I'm pretty sure most of you have encountered the 'BLUEPOWER' stickers on Isuzu trucks' emblem, but have little to no information with regards to it.
Well, bluepower is a technology incorporated by Isuzu to ensure that their trucks emit less harmful pollutants to the environment to be at par with the set global emission standards(Euro 4).
What mainly differenciate the Bluepower christened trucks from their predecessors is the presence of an EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system.This system recycles the exhaust gases back into the intake manifold to ensure complete combustion of air fuel mixture, hence reducing the amount of toxic gases(nitrogen& carbon oxides) emitted.
In addition to that, bluepower technology ensures optimization of power delivery by incorporating a water cooled variable geometry turbocharger, to even out the power curve by increasing the low end torque through elimination of turbo lag.

FUN FACT:with the right quality of fuel, Euro 4 engines reduce coal dust by 97% and nitrogen oxides by 71% as compared to their Euro 2 counterparts.

WHAT POWERS UP THE ISUZU GXZ
Isuzu GXZ 345 is a unique truck on Kenyan roads that surprisingly grabs the attention of automotive enthusiasts .It comes as a surprise to many because they are not used to seeing prime mover trucks made by Isuzu.
This prime mover is powered up by a 6NX1 TCS engine. The engine is an inline 6 common-rail direct injection which churns out 345 Horsepower @ 2000RPM, and a torque of 1324NM @ 1300RPM. It has a displacement of 7790cc which is capable of hauling a gross combination mass of 52.5 tonnes,
Power is transmitted to the 6*4 axle configuration by a 9 speed ZF gearbox. It has a fuel tank capacity of 370 litres which is more than enough to propel you across the country. To keep the driver comfortable as S/He traverses the vast terrain, the seat is suspended by air.

It started out as rumours but as they say, rumours aren't far away from the truth. It's now official that Mash East Africa who have for the longest time operated a Scania only fleet has shifted their sails to the Isuzu way.
They have gone for the F series bus model;FVR34S to be specific, which comes with a 4x2 or a 6x2 axle configuration. Mash must have preferred the 6x2 axle configuration for its comfort and huge payload.
The FVR34 has a maximum seat capacity of 67 passengers but Mash will possibly max it out at 45 seats for a decent amount of legroom. It's powered by the 6HK1-TCS engine which has a displacement of 7790cc. This engine is an inline 6 turbo-diesel, with a common rail and a direct method of fuel injection. This makes the powerplant fuel efficient and powerful enough to churn out an output of 280 Horsepower @ 2400 RPM, and a Torque output of 882 NM @ 1450 RPM. The power is distributed by an 8 speed ZF9s1110 TD manual gearbox making it capable of hauling a gross weight of 25 Tonnes.
The standard front and rear suspension comes with a multi leaf spring and double acting shock absorbers with a stabilizer bar. It utilizes full air and exhaust brakes for the primary and auxillary braking respectively.The fuel tank has a carrying capacity of 370 litres which can averagely propel the bus for a distance of 1400 Kilometres.
As they say, there's power in time and change is inevitable. Let's see how the new partnership goes, and hope that it will yield positive results with regards to cash flows.

BMW TWIN POWERTURBO EXPLAINED
Engine downsizing has been a trend for many manufacturers out here and BMW has not been left out. The trend has been necessitated by stricter environmental regulations, hence the urge to produce smaller, fuel economical but more powerful engines.
The Bavarians responded to this with quite an innovative technology known as Twin power turbo. Well, this has been an ambiguous term in the auto world, as most people think these engines contain two turbos in the setup. However, this is not the case as the setup has a single turbo with twin scrolls. Initially, this term landed BMW on a lawsuit for using it as a marketing gimmick to entice buyers who ended up thinking that the engines had two different turbos.
HOW DOES IT WORK
The conventional turbo uses a single channel of exhaust gases to feed fresh compressed air to the intake manifold. However, this poses a challenge in obtaining low end torque at low engine RPMs’, as there’s low exhaust gases output needed to spool the turbo. Many manufacturers solve this by installing two turbos whereby one operates at low rpms while the second one kicks in at high RPMs’.
The Twin power turbo technology incorporates two different exhaust flow channels in one turbo to harness low end torque and peak power out of an engine. The larger channel directs exhaust gases to the outer edge of the turbine blades, while the smaller one directs the gases to the inner edge of the turbine blade. This promotes peak engine performance across the RPM band.
ADVANTAGES OF TWIN POWER TURBO
1. It improves engine response at low RPM’s and peak power at high RPMs.
2. It solves the exhaust backpressure problems that’s associated with turbocharged engines, by separating exhaust tubes of cylinders that are working against each other.
3. It improves engine’s efficiency and fuel economy by incorporating unique tuning with higher ignition delay, resulting to a slightly lean air fuel mixture.
