Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain advisory expected to affect various parts of the country between Monday Mar 12 and Friday Mar 16. The counties forecast to be affected by the heavy rainfall include: Kisii, Kericho, Bomet, Narok, Migori, Kakamega, Kajiado, Nakuru, Kwale, Marsabit, Isiolo, Turkana, Samburu, Nairobi, Nyeri, Kiambu, Murang’a, Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Kilifi, Mombasa, Lamu and Taita Taveta.
Heavy rainfall of more than 40mm in 24hrs is likely to occur:
Tuesday March 13 affected counties include areas of Western, South and Central Rift Valley, Central Kenya, including Nairobi area.
Wednesday March 14 affected counties include areas of South Rift Valley, Southern Lowlands, Northern and Central parts including Nairobi area.
Thursday March5 and Friday Mar 16 affected counties include areas of Western, Coast, Northern, Rift valley, Central and Southern Lowlands are expected to continue receiving heavy rainfall.
In Nairobi county, the rain is likely to cause flashfloods in the following areas which are known to be the main flooding zones:
South C Shopping Centre, Mathare, Huruma
Loresho, Muthangari/Kileleshwa Ring Road interchange
Lavington- Chalbi Drive
Globe Roundabout
Donholm, Mbagathi/Langata Road roundabout, Nairobi West
Ruai, Utawala, Mukuru slums, Kibera
Flooding is also expected in the law lying area of the county as follows:
Maziwa-Zimmerman on Kamiti Road
River Bank area on the Baba Dogo-Outer Ring Road
Garden Estate, Thome, Roysambu, Kahawa West
Ojijo Road, Museum Hill overpass and Underpass,
Nyayo Estate Embakasi, Eastleigh
Pangani area along Thika Rd Highway.
Note: Counties which border Tanzania such as Narok, Kajiado, Taita Taveta and Kwale are forecast to receive moderate rainfall from Saturday Mar 10.
ALL are advised to be aware of the risk of flash floods. Be advised that floods and fast moving water are extremely dangerous.
Note:
15 cm (6 inches) of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control and potential stalling. Drive Slowly.
0.3 metres (1 ft) of water will float many vehicles. Avoid.
0.6 metres (2 ft) of rushing water will carry away most vehicles, including SUVs and pickups. Keep off.
The Meteorological Department has asked the public to monitor local media for updates if conditions change significantly.
