For four months, with donors, partners and the artist community we have raised USD 21,000 in relief, distributing seeds, saplings, groceries, school books, sanitary items, disaster relief items, and building materials to families who are still facing ongoing crisis.

Families are now able to reap crops they sowed from our earlier relief distributions, and while some public power lines have been restored many families are still homeless or living under expiring tarpaulin. We thank all community members who have weighed in to share their experiences, and contributed relief in goods and labour, helping to guide us towards cultural resilience.

Moving forward our efforts are directed to helping with rebuilding of the Flamstead Gardens Basic School and Maroon Town Basic School, as well as continued support for farmers and families.

New Local Space (NLS) is pleased to present the group exhibition ‘…and surely we’ll never die’ opening on Saturday, December 13.

‘…and surely we’ll never die’ presents the community work made this year in Maroon Town, St. James during the Sustainable Art Residency and Summer Camp during which New Local Space administered workshops to 35 students ages 4 to 15 years old in sustainable technologies and materials within  the local environment.

Featuring two dimensional and three dimensional works made of materials including natural fibres, recycled paper-based clay, recycled plastic bottles, local soils and salvaged charcoal, the exhibition highlights the prescient collective gesture made by the organisation and the artists featured in the show to work in harmony with the environment. Administered in the quiet summer before the first documented Category 5 storm to make landfall in the Atlantic Basin, yet publicly presented within Hurricane Melissa’s aftermath of socio-ecological and economic devastation, this exhibition invites the public to coconspire in creating a new normal in which we work with the environment and our collective survival and not against.

Proceeds will help to provide back-to-school supplies (bags, stationery and textbooks) and farm recovery items (seeds, suckers, growing medium and trays) for approximately 200 households.

The exhibition and NLS’ programming are made possible through partnership with Creative Sounds and the National Gallery of Jamaica, and in part with the support of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) and the financial contribution of the European Union (EU).
