🔧 Another hidden problem uncovered…

This VW T5 Transporter came into Hudson Motor Company for front suspension work, where we found something that could easily have been missed.

One of the lower ball joint securing bolts was loose, and on closer inspection we discovered that a previous repair had used a UNC Helicoil in a metric suspension mounting.

Not only is this incorrect, but it also makes future servicing and repairs unnecessarily difficult.

Rather than adapting to the incorrect thread, we removed the previous repair and carefully restored the mounting using a metric Time-Sert, returning the component to the correct specification.

Steering and suspension are not areas where shortcuts should ever be taken. We believe repairs should restore the vehicle as the manufacturer intended, giving our customers confidence that the job has been carried out properly.

Blind Exhaust Manifold Stud Drill Guide

A VW T5 Transporter came into the workshop with a broken exhaust manifold stud buried on the blind side of the cylinder head. There was virtually no line of sight to the stud and accuracy was critical.

Rather than relying on luck, we designed and manufactured a bespoke drill guide locating from the manifold mounting holes. Using our mini lathe we centre-drilled an 8mm steel guide bush allowing the stud to be drilled perfectly down the centre before being removed with a stud extractor.

The result was a completely intact broken stud and an undamaged cylinder head.

Sometimes the answer isn’t finding the right tool. It’s making one.

Had a few anxious miles the other evening when my dashboard said I had only 6 miles left in the battery. From the time the message came up to the next message was literally a few minutes, that message being 0 miles. Thankfully, I made the charge point with my heart pounding like a piston engine. I don't know who the guy on the left is, but I can tell you that the chap on the right is someone special. Andrew is his name and you could not wish for a nicer chap. I had the pleasure of employing him for a few months and it was a joy (ok, yes we did have a few scary moments, but lets not go there)

Customers were impressed with his approach as were the rest of the staff.
