Last week saw the return of the DB6 which we are working on in collaboration with Aston Service Dorset. Previously we had refinished the chassis and shown it in a previous post. When it left us it went back to Aston Service to have all the refurbished suspension fitted and then back up to Shapecraft for the outer panels to be finished and fitted. Now back with us in a dry built state ready for final fettling and painting. The customer has yet to choose a colour!! We will keep you up to date with progress over the next few months.

This week we have had the owner of the DB2/4 over from the UK to sign off the bodywork so have done a complete dry build of the car in its second coat of primer so he could see how it will all look when finally painted. He was very happy with it all as this is the first time he has many of the mods he specified in the flesh. As an aside it’s interesting to compare the frontal differences between the earlier DB2. this is the first time we have had them side by side.
finally the t-shirt shows how the week ended!!!!! Enough said, have a good weekend!!!

Here is another project we are colliberating with Aston Service Dorset on. It is a Mk2 DB6 they are carrying out a complete restoration on for a French customer. The body is being repaired by Shapecraft, one of the best in the business. We were always pencilled in to paint this car once paneled, but as it needed to return to Aston Service for a trial fit of the mechanical components it was decided it was as well for it to come for a short holiday to Jersey for all the sub-structure to be painted. So on arrival it was sent to PCS for multi media blasting (glass bead on the edges of the Ali roof and fine sand on the steel) then in to a coat of epoxy primer. Then the shell was extensively seam sealed and reprimed. Aston Service had specified a product called Lizard Skin on the bulkhead and floorpans which is a heat proof coating. We had never worked with this before, and it was a bit of a learning curve, but the end result is amazing!!! Then in to a complete coat inside out of our favorite Polycoat which is a really hard wearing, textured finish. The shell has now been returned to Aston Service for all the running gear to be installed, then back up to Shapecraft for paneling then will return to us near the end of this year for it’s final exterior top coats. The customer is undecided on colour yet so watch this space!!!!

Here’s another rather impressive and unusual Front End Friday post. A supercharged Petersen Bentley with low flying DB4!!!! When Jamie had his Bentley built last year Bob Peteresen was over the moon that he asked if it was possible to have a tow bar on it!! He said he had always wanted a customer to ask for one and beautifully engineered a removable one for Jamie’s car. Since the car arrived Jamie has been looking for a suitable “load” to tow and when he saw Paul’s DB4 in the workshop last week he hatched a plan!! Paul and Pam very generously not only lent us their car, but also their Manor so today we took the cars up and took some pictures in front of the house. The eagle-eye‘d will note the car is not secured on the trailer as we were all way too nervous to actually move the combination just pose it for the pictures!! Thanks to all who made it possible and next week we are going to start posting more project updates.
Just as an aside it was 8 years ago yesterday that we first launched the Classic Motorworks page!!

No posts from us for a little while so thought we’d restart with a ”Front End Friday” post and they don’t get much better than this!!!! It’s not often you see two such good looking V8s in the same place, both beautiful to drive although maybe a bit of a handful for our Island?!!!! More regular updates from us coming soon!!!

Last, but by no means least of our well overdue updates is our resident DB 2/4 project!!! This one has been a massive undertaking from the very beginning having all the mechanical and chassis work done by Darren Wood and then a huge amount of work to restore the bodywork. Every aspect of the car is either corroded or worn out and sometimes it has been hard to see an end to it, but we have reached a milestone today as all the body repairs and modifications have been completed and the bonnet components reassembled and fitted to the car for the first time as a complete assembly! I did wonder at times whether we would ever see this day!!!! The bonnet gaps still need a little adjusting, but at least all the fabrication and welding is finished and we can move forward in to the paint prep stage. In amongst these photos are two of the car taken when it arrived at Aston Service Dorset many moons ago just to remind us of how far we have come!!! sorry the pics aren’t in chronological order!!!!!

Next to be introduced is this 1973 Citroen DS 23 Pallas. We have only just started this project recently. The car is going to have a bare metal respray and all the steel substructure refinished in original black. Unfortunately as is usually the case , once the car was stripped and paint stripped the project immediately grew due to corrosion and poor historical repairs! As the owner absolutely adores this car and plans to keep it it wasn’t a hard decision to do the job correctly. So the skins have been removed from the doors and the frames media blasted and epoxy primed to be repaired ready for new door skins. The wings have been stripped, corroded areas cut out, media blasted and epoxy primed. The rather intricate door seal retaining channels are having to be either repaired or replaced. Lots of nice new metal has arrived from CitroenDS.net. One of the many Citroen quirks is the use of some unusual sized fasteners such as M7 and M9 nuts and bolts that we have had to source specially for this job and we have even been able to find the correct Citroen style and size washers too!!! A DS looks really strange with all of its panels removed and not many people recognize what it is when they see it. It looks like we are going to have to take a trip to France to collect a replacement roof from a breakers we have been recommended just outside Dinan As this one is badly corroded. We will try and do regular updates on this project as it progresses.

Time to introduce another of our long term projects. This car arrived with us early 2019 and quite a few people have spotted it in the background of other photos and asked about it, but we didn’t want to say too much about it until we had the owner‘s permission as he is a very private man. It’s a genuine one Jersey owner from new RS2000 and is totally original only ever having had a repair to the R/H rear wing and bootlid in it whole lifetime!! The owner remembers the day he was handed the keys by the salesman at La Motte Ford in 1978. With 45,000 miles on the clock it was parked in the garage in 1987 as it needed a new clutch and hasn’t turned a wheel until it was brought to us!! It is totally original inside and out, but unfortunately was just a bit too far gone to be just recommissioned. During the strip we have even managed to save the windscreen seals! The car was stripped and there was very little rust. We removed the front wings and door skin bottoms and then had it all media blasted by our friends at PCS. we have carried out part panel repairs and then refitted the original wings so there isn’t a non-original panel on the car. Genuine Ford metal as the repro panels are of dubious quality. It now sits with all the metalwork repairs done in epoxy primed. We will take a little break now until the next stage of prep and paint.
