Check out this Ford Transit Custom which had engine failure due to the wet belt failing.

On the 2017 Ford Transit Custom fitted with the 2.0-litre EcoBlue engine, Ford UK has revised the wet belt (timing belt, tensioner & idlers) replacement interval to 100,000 miles or 6 years, whichever comes first.

Unfortunately this customer had only done 58,000 miles and the damage was done, this proving that regular servicing and use of the correct grade oil is a must with these engines.

The wet belt system used in the Ford Transit Custom is designed to operate within the engine oil, but over time this constant submersion can contribute to premature wear. Being in direct contact with hot, circulating oil exposes the belt to chemical degradation, as additives and contaminants within the oil gradually break down the belt’s rubber compound. Prolonged exposure to these conditions can cause the belt to swell, soften, and lose structural integrity, leading to delamination or fragmentation. Once weakened, the belt is more susceptible to slipping, shedding debris (teeth), or even failing completely, which can result in significant engine damage if not addressed promptly through timely inspection and replacement.

Volkswagen T5 in for rear seat installation, this involves removing all under trays along with the fuel tank to access the bolt hole location, holes were drilled and the seat base location was then cut into the floor without removing the full floor.
Once the base were fitted seats were installed and everything put back together.
