In 1924, Alfonsina Strada became the only woman to officially compete in a men’s Grand Tour.

Facing skepticism and grueling dirt roads over 12 stages, she crashed repeatedly and even broke her handlebars, which she repaired using a broken broomstick handle.

Though technically disqualified for finishing outside the time limit on a brutal, storm-ridden stage, the organizers allowed her to continue. She finished the remaining 400-mile segments to cross the final Milan finish line, earning the lifetime respect of her male peers.
