In 1993, GMC took a small two-door SUV, fitted a turbocharged 4.3-litre V6 and permanent all-wheel drive, then accidentally invented a problem Germany would spend the next three decades monetising.

This is the GMC Typhoon, one of only 4,697 built across 1992 and 1993. The standard version was already quick enough to upset sports cars and anyone who had just paid for one.

For this example, however, standard was apparently too calm. It has upgraded engine and transmission internals, a Precision turbo, water/methanol injection, nitrous, MSD ignition, an ECU tune and electric exhaust cutouts.

It is less a tuning package than a sequence of poor decisions arranged in exactly the right order.

The seller says it produced 682 horsepower at the wheels. No dyno sheet was supplied, so treat that figure like a story told in a pub: fascinating, plausible and best approached with one eyebrow raised.

Modern performance SUVs advertise their speed with wings, screens and illuminated grilles. The Typhoon remains a black filing cabinet with four driven wheels and deeply antisocial intentions.

In 1982, one owner bought a new Volkswagen T3, found a wrecked Porsche 911 SC and created the van Volkswagen had forgotten to build.

The 911’s flat-six was rebuilt, then Wohlmuth GmbH installed the complete Porsche drivetrain. By 1984, the conversion had official Austrian road approval.

3.0-litre flat-six.
204 hp.
Manual gearbox.
Rear-wheel drive.

Fuchs wheels, wider arches and extra lamps offer the first clues. Inside, three Recaro seats and a Porsche-inspired dashboard continue the Eighties seriousness.

The sound sends people searching for a 911. Then a silver panel van arrives.

Most Transporters carried tools, parcels or families. This one carried 204 horsepower and excellent judgment.

Citroën took the name of a sensible family hatchback and sent it across the Sahara with 320 horsepower.

This is the Citroën ZX Rallye Raid C05, restored in the yellow No. 201 livery it wore at the 1990 Rallye des Pharaons.

Ari Vatanen and Bruno Berglund finished fourth on its debut.

Then C05 entered the Dakar three years in succession.

1991: sixth.
1992: seventh.
1993: seventh.

Three starts. Three finishes. The desert makes that statistic considerably more impressive than it sounds.

The machinery was delightfully serious:

Mid-mounted turbocharged four-cylinder.
320 hp.
Four-wheel drive.
Seven-speed manual gearbox.

The body borrowed the ZX name and a vague family resemblance. Everything underneath had been designed for high-speed survival across terrain that would make most SUVs ask for a recovery truck.

The wider ZX Rallye Raid program won 36 of 42 events and four Dakars.

Calling it a ZX remains one of Citroën’s better jokes.
