Those who know us are aware of the passion, care, and availability we put into every single rental. We maintain our vehicles to the highest standards because we want to offer our clients an impeccable experience.

But every now and then, we too would like the right to respond.

Negative feedback – fortunately rare – almost always revolves around one issue: vehicle damage.
Often, a small scratch or minor dent is seen as “no big deal.” But in our line of work, even seemingly minor damage comes with significant costs, technical downtime, and a direct impact on the quality of service we can offer to all other clients.

🛠️ A car can’t be fixed with a pen or a brush.
And the costs we ask for are not a “penalty,” but simply what it takes to restore the vehicle to its original standard.

With the utmost respect, we’re sharing an excerpt from a conversation that followed a negative review — just to show how difficult it can sometimes be to find common ground, even when we put in our best effort.

In Florence, there are two different types of restricted traffic zones (ZTL), and it’s important to understand the difference to avoid fines:

👉 Historic Center ZTL:

This is the traditional restricted traffic area located in the heart of Florence. Access is prohibited for most vehicles during certain hours, except for taxis, buses, ambulances, residents, and specially authorized vehicles.
The entrances are marked by electronic signs and camera-equipped gates: simply driving through one of these gates will automatically result in a fine if you are not authorized.
Our vehicles are not authorized to enter this area, so it is essential to avoid driving through the historic center unless you have a special permit.

👉 “Scudo Verde” ZTL:

This is an environmental ZTL, aimed at restricting access to high-emission vehicles (usually older, more polluting cars).
The signs for the Green Shield zone are located at the city limits of Florence, far from the historic center.
Our vehicles are allowed to drive through these access points because they meet the environmental standards. There is no fine for entering this zone with our cars.

In summary:

🔴 Historic Center ZTL = do not enter with our vehicles.

🟢 Green Shield ZTL = safe to drive through with no penalties.

Over the past 12 months, we’ve seen a 50% reduction in ZTL fines (Limited Traffic Zone) compared to the previous year. This means significant savings for our customers: the fine for unauthorized entry into the ZTL is around €100. What initially seemed like a concern regarding the distance from our garage has now turned into an amazing advantage for our clients. 🚫💸

The initial inconvenience of the garage’s location has been more than compensated for by the financial and time-saving benefits. Our customers can now focus on their trip without worrying about ZTL fines—thanks to our strategic location that helps avoid the busiest ZTL areas in Florence.

Dear customers,

We’ve received some feedback about the location of our garage, so we’d like to clarify a few things. Due to restoration work at our usual garage, the pick-up point has been temporarily moved outside the ZTL, just a few minutes’ walk from our office. This is a temporary solution that affects all car rental companies in Florence, not just Tuscany by Car, and will remain in place throughout 2025. We’re truly sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but rest assured we’re doing our best to maintain the high-quality service you’re used to.

Another important note is about fines: we understand the ZTL in Florence can be tricky, and that’s why we provide all the necessary information, both in printed form and with helpful travel tips. However, it’s important to point out that all car rental companies, not just Tuscany by Car, charge an administrative fee for every fine received during the rental period. This is because rental agencies also face penalties for each ticket received and must re-notify the fines to the clients responsible for the violations.

We’re sorry to see negative reviews on this topic, but we want to assure you that we do everything possible to help you avoid issues with the ZTL. We hope this message helps clarify things and thank you for your understanding.

Due to some renovation works at the garage where car pick up normally occurs, the pickup location is moving a few hundred meters. After careful research, we have selected a garage that aligns with our company standards for location and convenience. The chosen location is situated 600m from Santa Maria Novella train station, 200m from the first tram stop from the station, outside the Limited Traffic Zone, strategically positioned to reach the best destinations in Tuscany and providing a direct connection to Amerigo Vespucci Airport. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and look forward to welcoming you for the summer season 2024!✌️✌️✌️
