Italy's new Highway Code, sent by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to Parliament, recognises for the first time that a car can drive itself. That is good news for Italy and for everyone who, like Niulinx, is working to bring autonomous driving to our cities.
The text, however, has two fundamental flaws. It still requires a person on board, because remote supervision is tied to an implementing decree that is not currently provided for. And it leaves the supervisor liable for the vehicle even when the system is the one driving.
As it stands, the text discourages anyone who wants to offer autonomous driving services on public roads.
“Legislative processes are slow by nature,” says our CEO Luca Foresti. “The risk for the country is that operators like Niulinx will go first to other European countries with more advanced codes to deliver their services. It would be a missed opportunity for Italy.”
