FEROCINI AT ZENNGINE
We got a call from Shumi last week to book an appointment for his KTM 390 ADV and we happily obliged.
The agenda was clear: Shumi had been experimenting with multiple electronic accessories on the bike and had now finalised the setup.
The problem? These experiments left behind a wiring mess with multiple looms, badly connected joints, wires passing from everywhere. Impossible to trace or diagnose and definitely not reliable. We had a massive task at hand. Challenge Accepted!
Shumi was here bright and early, and we quickly got all the bodywork off to first trace each circuit, identify connections, and come up with a plan.

The ADV comes with 4 accessory ports, which was a blessing: 2 Always on and 2 wired to ignition, 1 of each on the front and the rear.
The Bajas had their own relays and were located under the seat. The CarPlay unit had its own power unit located on the front. The rest of the lot were wired directly to the accessory ports.
After multiple discussions, we finalised to keep the Bajas’ relays and the Denali tail lamp at the rear, and move all others to the front accessory ports. The DIN out was connected to the Always on port; everything else only when the key is on.
Then, switch placement, the two sets of S1s are used as primary and flasher. The switch for the flasher was already well placed under the clutch lever, so we just cleaned up wiring. While deciding on the second switch for the primary, Shumi recommended we place them somewhere next to the display, so we quickly got a design done and made a bracket to house 2 switches - one for the primary and one for the CarPlay unit, so that we can switch it off if needed. It looks quite neat, and makes it look more like a Dakar bike now.
