Mercedes X-Class vs BMW Pickup

Mercedes has just released its X-Class concept pickup and the frenzy is growing strong. Markets around the world are set to get this “urban lifestyle pickup,” save for North America. Regardless, the Mercedes pickup will undoubtedly cause huge waves in the segment, likely spawning competition from other luxury automakers, including BMW.

We created a rendering of a BMW pickup a few months before the X-Class Concept’s launch. It was based in pure speculation on what BMW could possibly come up with for its first luxury truck. Unlike the Mercedes, we figured the BMW would utilize a unibody architecture shared with the X5 crossover. Luxury and comfort being first, a rough-riding ladder frame truck wouldn’t be the first choice for engineers, right? Mercedes obviously doesn’t think so, but hey, BMW might want to cater to a different, more refined audience who aren’t towing 7,000 pounds or hauling a metric ton.

Both trucks will definitely be big departures from the Toyota Hiluxs and Ford Rangers of the world, and Mercedes says it’s catering to Gen Xers who have previously never considered buying a pickup. BMW would likely follow that direction, leaving the commercial and agricultural sales to the segment stalwarts.

Despite the two trucks (theoretically) going after the same audience, there will undoubtedly be differences. Let’s explore that theoretical world between the Mercedes X-Class Concept and a BMW pickup that doesn’t yet exist.

Is Infiniti Finally Ready To Jump Into The EV Bandwagon?

Infiniti’s association with electric vehicles dates back to 2012 when it introduced the Emerg-E Concept at the Geneva Motor Show and the LE Concept at the New York Auto Show. Since then, Nissan’s luxury brand has been quiet on that front. However, things could change soon as the brand’s decision-makers are considering introducing an electric vehicle for the Chinese market.

Infiniti president Roland Krueger spoke to Bloomberg recently, commenting on how the company plans to address the rapidly evolving future of the industry that’s leaning towards the adoption of electrification. “When I think about EV, we design it for China definitely, even as the first market to launch,” Krueger said. “We are discussing this internally constantly what is the right timing for Infiniti to have such vehicles.”

It’s no secret that if you’re a brand planning to sell EVs, the first market you look at is China. The nation became the largest EV market in the world in 2015 on the shoulders of the government investing heavily on charging infrastructure and subsidizing EV purchases for its citizens. Companies like Tesla and BMW have even made the market a priority for their future electric cars. If Infiniti decides to green light the production of its own EVs, a similar strategy would be a no-brainer.

It’s far from a foolproof approach through, which partly explains why management hasn’t embraced the idea sooner than most people thought, opting instead to focus its attention on building hybrid models that provide better range. Still, a day will come when EVs become integral to an automaker’s lineup and Infiniti, at least according to Krueger, could build an electric car quickly thanks to having parent firm Nissan and alliance partner Renault on its side. The question now is “when” that’s going to happen as opposed to “if” it’s going to happen.

Nissan GT-R Driven From Singapore To The Base Camp Of Mt. Everest

Kah Chuan Hoong thinks he just went on an adventure of a lifetime, but for the rest of us, the man is worthy of a standing ovation. So what exactly did he do? Well, he drove his modified Nissan GT-R from Singapore to Mount Everest’s base camp in Nepal, a distance of more than 2,175 miles. Oh, and did we mention that the base camp is around 17,650 feet above sea level?

You can call him an ambitious explorer, a crazy person, or maybe even both. But you can’t deny that what he accomplished is truly spectacular, especially when you consider that the GT-R, apart from modifications to increase its ride height and the front bumper to increase ground clearance, doesn’t appear to have any performance upgrades. Hoong didn’t dive into the details of how he got to the base camp of Mt. Everest, but he did write a post when he arrived on October 24. He also has a pretty extensive photo album, documenting his entire journey, right up to the moment he accomplished the seemingly insurmountable task.

Better yet, the GT-R appears to be in good condition, despite some harrowing ordeals along the way, including all the difficult roads and water crossings that Hoong had to get through to reach his destination. The fact that the GT-R is still in good enough condition to make the trip back home to Singapore despite being exposed to the sheer height of the base camp makes this story all the more remarkable.

And to top it all off, Hoong says that according to his Tibetan guide Lhakpa Tenzin, his GT-R is the first supercar to ever reach Mount Everest’s base camp. How’s that for making history?

2016 Ford Focus RS by Roush Performance

I’ve ways felt like in addition to being an all-around awesome car, the Ford Focus RS also has the potential to be an aftermarket darling. It’s the kind of car that seamlessly blends a modern aggressive look with performance numbers to match. In other words, it’s ripe for the tuning world considering the wealth of modifications that it’s open to. So yes, I’m not surprised that Ford is rolling out a bunch of modified Focus RS models at the 2016 SEMA Auto Show. Even better, one of them comes by way of Roush Performance, considered as one of the best Ford tuners in the business.

See, Roush knows its way around Ford models like a Liberty Island tour guide knows his way around the Statue of Liberty. There’s an expertise that comes with building programs for Ford models that can only be achieved through years of building it, which is exactly what Roush Performance has been doing all this time. The results have been different, but just like what the tuner is presenting at SEMA, they all border on the ridiculous.

This particular program has it all. It has aerodynamic upgrades, engine modifications, enhanced suspension, a new set of wheels, and even a new shifter ball and performance pedals. Individually, these upgrades create a distinct separation from the standard Focus RS, but when you put them all together, the differences speak for themselves.

At the 2015 New York Auto Show, Honda surprised us with the 2015 Civic Coupe Concept, which looked oddly production ready. The accompanying press release went on to confirm our suspicions that this was the preview of the 10th generation Civic, which then hit the streets in the fall of 2015.

Now at the 2015 LA Auto Show, Honda has pulled the covers off the actual production model of the Civic Coupe. The car is slotted to arrive at dealers in March of 2016, giving coupe-curious customers a completely revised contender to consider.

This new Civic isn’t a revolutionary redesign when compared to the 2015 Civic Coupe, but it certainly is a great improvement. And improvement is something the current Civic needs, as its last redesign was not well received and its almost immediate refresh didn’t help much.

Its more aggressive styling and slew of interesting exterior and interior details should help the Civic Coupe compete with its main rivals at Kia and Scion.

2017 Lotus Evora 400 Roadster

Lotus was in big trouble a couple of years ago, struggling with net losses of more than $250 billion a year. That’s when Jean-Marc Gales stepped in as CEO and the British finally began to move in the right direction. Gales’ new strategy included a redesign of the Evora, which allowed Lotus to continue its operations on U.S. soil. Now, only a few months before the new 2016 Lotus Evora 400 goes on sale nationwide, Gales confirmed there’s also a roadster version on the way.

The convertible sports car will cross the pond to the U.S. six months after the coupe, which means a launch date is expected sometime in June 2016. When it arrives, the Evora 400 Roadster will join a market that already includes two remarkable sports cars, the 2016 Porsche Boxster Spyder and the 2016 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, both newly introduced for the 2016 model year. As it stands, Lotus won’t have it easy, but despite rough competition, Gales still hopes the new roadster will be as popular as the coupe.

There aren’t many official details to run by here, but the car is not much of a mystery. Moreover, Gales was kind enough to provide just about enough info on the Roadster to allow us to put together a rendering of the car, as well as a speculative review on what it might bring to the table.
