After 23 years of working on motorcycles from almost every major manufacturer—and receiving OEM factory training on many of them—I've seen just about every mechanical failure imaginable. Some failures come from poor maintenance or abuse, but many are simply the result of engineering compromises, weak designs, or inconsistent quality control.

Not all motorcycles are built with the same priorities. Comparing a Japanese inline-four to an Italian V4 isn't fair—they're designed to achieve very different goals. Every manufacturer has produced exceptionally reliable models and at least one that has developed a reputation for serious reliability issues.

The reality is that you can't maintain a fundamentally flawed design into becoming a great one. If a model has a known weakness—such as a cam chain tensioner, gearbox, or charging system—the best solution is often an updated part or factory redesign.

That said, if all else is equal, here are five things you can do to maximize reliability:

Follow the maintenance schedule—especially oil, filters, valve checks, and coolant changes.

Fix known issues early by installing updated OEM or proven aftermarket parts before they fail.

Warm the engine properly and avoid high RPM until it's at operating temperature.

Use quality consumables—correct oil, coolant, filters, and genuine or high-quality replacement parts.

Ride with mechanical sympathy. Smooth inputs, regular use, and addressing small problems before they become big ones will almost always extend a motorcycle's life.

They say follow your dreams ,follow your passion.

I say dream it and do it, whatever it is.

I've been working on and riding motorcycles since 1998 and can now say I have worked on pretty much every conceivable motorcycle brand that's still in production today and some that time forgot and people have only heard of.

I am a factory trained technician for most of these brands but you wont ever hear me talk about that because it doesn't matter to anyone but me .

For me motorcycles are a way of life in the literal sense of the word .I make my money working and being around motorcycles and live and breathe motorcycles everyday.

You can see me work on a few of my Favorite motorcycles in this post not because they are perfect, not because they are the best (debatable till the end of time ),but because they bring out something visceral when I ride and work on them .

If you don't feel this when you ride your motorcycle you are riding the spec sheet or a social media trend and thats not what' it's about.

Over the years we have rebuilt hundreds of engines of all types ages and configurations ,from the modern to the classic and vintage .

Rebuilding this engine after about 10 years, this particular engine was rebuilt by us a decade ago.and now has over 90k kms on this particular motorcycle.

We overhauled the entire engine with new bearings ,oil pump ,hydraulic tappets, crankshaft parts as well as new piston and a freshly machined head ,valves and seats.

Everything was cleaned, inspected and installed to factory specs bringing this thumper back to life.

rotor puller machined ,tested and ready to go for the hardening process.

We couldn't find a readily available rotor puller for this particular motorcycle, we had it machined to get to the sprag clutch which is not engaging correctly.

getting the OEM forks and shocks setup for a shorter rider.

Lowering is accomplished the correct way , which requires the shock and forks travel to be reduced 30mm internally and new springs to be installed therby reducing overall seat height

Lowering linkages are not the best way to accomplish this as they have a negative effect on the rising rate of the rear linkage and shock absorber.

Servicing a OEM 2016 Rear shock.

Being almost a decade old and never having been serviced the overall condition was poor and almost non serviceable with major wear to the piston with a disintegrated piston band and some luckily only light wear to the shock body.

The shock oil had broken down completely and there was absolutely no damping at all with the damaged piston.

We replaced the piston assembly and seals after cleaning and inspecting all components.

The shock was filled, vacuum bled and pressurized with nitrogen and ready to be installed in the

Working on the family of Italian motorcycles like the is not new to me,working on them as a certified Aprilia & Motoguzzi technician is another feather in my technician cap.
