Electricity From The Past

During the digging and extensive exploration of the ancient ruins near capital of Iraq, Bagdad, a group of workers and archeologists founded seemingly ordinary small vase. It was in 1936. The object was made from the yellow clay and it was coated with some kind of insulation. Both sides were sealed with some strange material, which is the most similar to the bitumen or the asphalt base. Signs of the corrosion were noticeable on the vase body, which indicated the acidic reaction. This discovery was completely stumped scientists because nobody knew what this object was used for.

A few years later, the vase finally got its name- The Baghdad Battery or Parthian Battery. This term is now used as a general name for a group of artifacts, which have been founded in the Khuyut Rabbou, a small village near the Bagdad. It is assumed that these items are made during the first centuries A.D, probably during the Sassanid or the Parthian period.

After the initial battery technology was invented, numerous scientists went to work trying to perfect the battery. Robert Anderson was one such scientist and inventor, who is credited with inventing the electric car by building a carriage that was propelled by a battery. His work took place between 1832 and 1839.

An Automotive-Battery Breakthrough
Robert Anderson’s invention was a stepping stone for future scientists like Gaston Plante, who invented the first lead-acid battery in 1859, which was also the first rechargeable battery ever made. This battery is important to the future of the automobile, as it is the staple technology for vehicles in the coming decades, as the majority of car batteries are of the lead-acid variety. These lead-acid batteries are a part of a category known as the SLI, or Starting – Lighting – Ignition. This is important to note, as car batteries don’t simply power a car’s starter, but also the entire vehicle system.

Car Batteries Changed Everything
Gaston Plante may not have been aware when he created the lead-acid battery, but his invention has propelled the automotive industry into the future, and is the reason why vehicles have advanced to where they are today.
