In 1800, Alessandro Volta showed that chemistry could create continuous electric current.

His Voltaic Pile created a pathway for electricity — but once the chemical reactants were exhausted, the battery could not recharge.

Then came a breakthrough. ⚡

🇫🇷 In 1859, Gaston Planté introduced the first practical rechargeable lead–acid battery.

💚 BENTLEY: THE BLOWER, THE TAKEOVER & THE RETURN

By 1928, Bentley needed more performance.

⚙️ W.O. Bentley believed in more engine capacity.
🔥 Sir Henry “Tim” Birkin believed in forced induction.

W.O. created the naturally aspirated Speed Six.

Birkin went the rebellious way.

With Amherst Villiers’ Roots-type supercharger, Dorothy Paget’s financial support and Woolf Barnato’s approval, the 4½ Litre evolved into one of the most unforgettable pre-war Bentleys:

🏁 THE BENTLEY BLOWER.

Its engineering logic was simple but powerful:

🌬️ MORE AIR
→ ⛽ MORE FUEL
→ 💥 GREATER CYLINDER PRESSURE
→ ⚙️ MORE TORQUE
→ 🚀 MORE POWER

Approximate output:
🔹 110 bhp — naturally aspirated

But here’s the surprising part:

❌ THE BLOWER NEVER WON LE MANS.

At Le Mans in 1930, Birkin’s Blower battled Rudolf Caracciola’s supercharged Mercedes-Benz SSK.

Neither finished.

🏆 Bentley’s naturally aspirated Speed Six won.

Yet the Blower became a legend because of its mechanical aggression, unmistakable presence and Birkin’s fearless driving.

Then Bentley faced a completely different challenge.

📉 The Great Depression, development costs and weakening demand pushed the company into financial collapse.

In 1931, Rolls-Royce acquired Bentley.

Bentley later returned through Derby and Crewe, but its sporting character became quieter.

Then boost returned. 🔥

⚡ 1982 — Mulsanne Turbo
🏎️ 1985 — Turbo R

Performance, handling and attitude came back to the Winged B.

In 1998, Volkswagen acquired Bentley and Crewe.

From 2003:

BENTLEY: WHEN ENDURANCE BECAME PRESTIGE

Walter Owen Bentley began not in luxury showrooms, but among locomotives, motorcycles, metals and machines. ⚙️

His experiments with lighter aluminium pistons helped shape a philosophy that would define Bentley:

On 10 July 1919, Bentley Motors was founded with one ambition:
