Did you know what used lubricating oil is?

Used lubricating oil is petroleum-based or synthetic oil that has already served its purpose in engines, machinery, or industrial equipment. Over time, constant use, heat, contamination, and chemical breakdown reduce its effectiveness, making it unfit for its original application.

What many may not realize is that this oil often contains impurities, such as dirt, metal particles, water, sludge, and chemical residues, which are generated during its production and processing.

Understanding what used lubricating oil is the first step toward making more sustainable choices, because used lubricating oil is hazardous waste and must be handled, stored, and disposed of responsibly to prevent harm to the environment.

5th Rosefield Conference on Circular Economy in Used Oil.

Nothing beats the energy of a room full of leaders working toward a shared purpose!

We had an incredible experience exhibiting at the 5th Rosefield Energy Tech Conference on Circular Economy in Used Oil in New Delhi. Chaired by Shailendra Gokhale and backed by PRAI, the event focused entirely on driving sustainable oil management forward.

The real magic happened off-stage. Our team engaged in powerful, honest conversations about collection ecosystems, regulations, and circular economy practices. It was a strong reminder that real progress starts when we come together to think bigger.

NexG Petrolube Private Limited was a proud exhibitor at this conference and was represented by CA. Abhisek Hamirbasia, CA. Akhil Hamirbasia, CA. Anand Hamirbasia and Saurav Gautam.

Environmental benefits of recycling oil.

Recycling Used Cooking Oil and Used Lubricating Oil is a simple step that creates a big impact. It helps protect our environment by preventing water and soil pollution, conserving natural resources, and reducing harmful emissions.

Here’s how recycling makes a difference:

1. Prevents soil, land, and water pollution.

2. Reduces greenhouse gas emissions through responsible processing.

3. Conserves natural resources by reducing the need for fresh crude oil.

4. Supports efficient energy production by recycling Used Cooking Oil into biodiesel and Used Lubricating Oil into Re-Refined Base Oil (RRBO)

Reasons: Oil should never go down the drain.

Used oil should never be poured down the drain. Unlike other liquids, it cools, thickens, and eventually hardens, leading to serious plumbing and environmental problems.

Here’s what can happen:

1. Blocked pipes and costly damage
Oil builds up inside pipes, causing stubborn clogs and long-term plumbing issues.
2. Fatberg formation
In sewers, oil reacts with other substances to form large, waxy blockages that disrupt entire systems.
3. Harm to water bodies
A thin layer of oil on water blocks oxygen, putting aquatic life at risk
4. Health and legal concerns
Improper disposal can lead to safety hazards and regulatory issues.

Instead of disposing it carelessly, contribute your used oil responsibly. Turn waste into value while protecting the environment.

Used Oil and Waste Oil: What sets them apart?

It’s common to hear people use the terms Used oil and Waste oil interchangeably, but they are not the same. Used oil and waste oil belong to two different categories and should be understood and handled differently. Recognising this difference is important, not just for clarity but also to ensure proper management and to prevent potential environmental harm.

Used oil is simply oil that has been used one or multiple times and is no longer suitable for direct reuse. It mainly falls into two categories: Used Cooking Oil (UCO), which comes from homes and food businesses, and Used Lubricating Oil (ULO), generated from garages, workshops, and machinery. While both types of oil have served their purpose, they cannot be used again in their current form and must be properly recycled to be reused.

Waste oil, on the other hand, refers to oil that has deteriorated to a stage where it can no longer be used or recycled in its current form.

Understanding the type of oil we are dealing with is the first step towards responsible handling. By taking a moment to identify whether it is used oil or waste oil, we can protect both our environment and the people around us.

Did you know that something as simple as used oil can be a reason behind water pollution?

Used oil may look harmless, but its impact on water is serious and long-lasting.

Just a small amount of used oil can contaminate huge volumes of water, affecting ecosystems, wildlife, and even our drinking water.

Here’s why used oil should never be poured into water bodies:

✔ Massive water contamination
Even 1 litre of used oil can pollute up to 1 million litres of water.

✔ Harm to aquatic life
Oil forms a layer on water, blocking oxygen and sunlight, harming fish and plants.

✔ Toxic pollutants
Used lubricating oil contains harmful substances like heavy metals and chemicals.

✔ Long-term damage
Oil doesn’t break down easily, causing lasting harm to water bodies and the surroundings.

✔ Infrastructure issues
Used cooking oil can clog drains and increase sewage problems.

What leads to this?
✖ Pouring used oil into drains or on the ground
✖ Oil runoff during rains
✖ Leakage from storage or tanks

What can we do?
✔ Store used oil safely
✔ Dispose of used oil responsibly
✔ Choose used oil recycling over dumping

Small actions can prevent big damage.

Dispose of your used oil responsibly at usedoilindia.com and take a step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Did you know your business can turn Used Oil into value?

If your business generates Used Cooking Oil (UCO) or Used Lubricating Oil (ULO), you can partner with Used Oil India and manage it the right way.

Here’s how it benefits you:

✔ Earn from your waste
Instead of paying for waste disposal, businesses can contribute their used oil to us at usedoilindia.com, transforming their waste into a source of income.

✔ Protect the environment
Though Used Cooking Oil isn’t hazardous in nature, Used Lubricating Oil is and needs to be dealt with care, and should be recycled by authorised recyclers, as one liter of Used Lubricating Oil can contaminate one million liters of water.

✔ Support resource conservation
Used Cooking Oil is re-refined into biodiesel, and Used Lubricating Oil is transformed into Re-Refined Base Oil, reducing the need for virgin crude oil imports and supporting a circular economy.

✔ Safe & reliable handling
Authorized collection ensures secure transport and responsible recycling

It’s a simple step that creates value for your business while protecting the environment. Partner with Used Oil India and be part of a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Used Oil Recycling & UN SDG goals.

Used oil recycling is not just about waste management - it is about protecting our environment and supporting global sustainability goals.

When used oil is collected and recycled responsibly, it directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by reducing pollution, conserving resources, and promoting circular economy practices.

Used oil recycling contributes to:

SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
Promotes responsible recycling and reduces hazardous waste.

SDG 14 – Life Below Water
Prevents used oil from polluting rivers, oceans, and marine ecosystems.

SDG 13 – Climate Action
Cuts emissions by recycling oil instead of burning or dumping it.

SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy
Supports energy recovery and better resource efficiency.

So, you don’t just earn money by contributing your used oil to Used Oil India; you also align with UN SDGs and contribute to making this world a better place.
