Maintaining your bike regularly helps it to perform at its peak and ensures that you can enjoy safe and problem-free riding. A lot of the basic servicing jobs are easy enough to do yourself:

Oil and filter change
Your engine oil needs to be changed regularly to ensure engine longevity. Here’s how:
1. Remove the drain plug from the sump and drain the old oil into a drain tray. Check that the drain plug washer is in good condition then refit the drain plug.
2. Unscrew the old oil filter and thread the new filter into place. Dispose of the old filter.
Air filter
Bikes are fitted with either a paper or foam type air filter element. If it’s a paper element, you can tap it to dislodge dust. Foam elements need to be washed in solvent, then dried and re-oiled. If the element is very dirty or damaged, you will need to fit a new one.
Spark plugs
Over time, spark plugs will show signs of wear and the gap between their electrodes will go out of adjustment. You should measure the spark plug gaps with a feeler gauge and adjust the gap by bending the side electrode only. There will also be a build-up of deposits on their firing ends due to the combustion process. You will need to renew the plugs if they are dirty or badly corroded.
Drive chain adjustment
There should be a certain amount of slack in the drive chain – usually about 30mm, but check your handbook. The chain will stretch with use and you should take up the excess slack with the chain adjusters at the ends of the swingarm.
1. Measure the total amount of slack in the drive chain at a point midway between the sprockets on the lower run of chain.
2. If you need to adjust the chain tension, slacken the rear axle nut.
3. Use the adjusters on the ends of the swingarm to adjust chain tension. Adjust each one by the same amount.
4. Check that the wheel alignment marks are the same on each side, and then tighten the rear axle nut.
Oiling cables, levers and pivots
Because cables, stand and lever pivots are exposed to the elements, they must be lubed regularly to ensure smooth operation. Apply a few drops of light oil or an aerosol lubricant to the exposed ends of cables, the handlebar lever pivots, brake pedal and gearchange lever pivots and the stand pivots.
Clutch adjustment
Correct adjustment of the clutch is important to ensure smooth gear changes and prevent clutch slip or drag. Most clutches are cable operated and will have a threaded adjuster and locknut at each end to set free play.
Engine idle speed (tick over speed)
Check that the engine idles at the correct speed when it is fully warmed up. There is usually an idle speed adjuster k**b at the side of the carburetors.
Brake pads
Your brake pad friction material will eventually wear down to a low level, at which point the pads must be renewed. You can view the pad material via the mouth of the caliper. Most pads have wear indicator grooves, cutouts or a line to indicate the limit of wear. If you can’t see the pad material clearly, the pads must be removed from the caliper for examination.

Some useful tips to maintain your motorcycle in a good condition so as to achieve optimum performance

FOR GOOD MILEAGE :

Check your bike's tire pressure.

See that your bike's idling is not too high (suggested 1400 or 1300).

Get your carb retuned for mileage.

Do not exceed 4000 rpm.

For high speed riding:

Use K&N high performance air filters.

Get your carb retuned, ask for performance (mileage drastically reduces).

Shift gears @ 8500 rpm

Shift your bike's first gear @ 9000 rpm.

Up-jetting also helps.

Use different spark plugs.

For long life of your bike's engine:

Change engine oils at regular intervals (2000 to 2500 kilometers).

Never over rev your RPM going at high-speeds continuously, as it damages your bike's engine.

Never shift your bike from fifth gear to first gear instantaneously because it screws up your piston rings.

Never use bomber silencers or HRC"S because they damage your bike's engine.

OTHER MAINTENANCE TIPS:

Change your bike's fork oil once in every 12000 kilometers.

Check sprockets and replace them if necessary (wear out limit 40000 kilometers).

Get your bike's brake pads replaced (front) if screeching sound persists, as sometimes it happens due to lack of oil also.

Get your bike's taphead adjusted if necessary, get your exhaust cleaned if too much of carbon is present.

Get the bike's rims checked, it gets bent easily on Indian roads.

TIPS FOR CLEANING AND APPEARANCE:

Never use soap oil because it gradually fades the tank and other parts (use it only for rim and chain case).

Always use shampoo on the tank and visor and the other plastic parts.

Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, try parking your bike near some shade because it becomes dull if exposed to frequent sunlight.

More general points to remember:

Check the engine oil level weekly.

Keep adequate amount of petrol in bike (Use reserve petrol as less as possible).

Keep clutch, brakes, accelerator cables properly lubricated and in proper strength.

Maintain appropriate air pressure in tires as noted above.

Use a common petrol at all time (if speed then only speed , nothing else).

Maintain a speed of 40 to 60 kilometers.

Do not accelerate harshly and brake rashly.

Check bike for leakage of fuel or oil wastage.

Do not load the vehicle beyond its capacity.

Do not park the bike in excessive hot conditions as color of bike shades away and causes severe damage to digital meter as noted above.

All the bike needs during the first 1000 kilometers is smooth throttle operation

Just avoid increasing or decreasing the throttle in a rapid fashion.

I had touched 100 on my bike even before the first service and it did not harm but it increased the smoothness of the engine and the engine is still butter smooth after 15 months of its lifetime.

But I had never subjected the bike to rapid ups and downs during the first 2500 kilometers

Also do warming up in winter mornings.

If your bike has kick, then always begin your day with a kick-start.

Avoid water in your digital speedometer.

Apply brakes and gear change less and use when required.

Ride in 45 to 50 kilometers per hour, as it is economic fuel savings range when your bike engine is new.

Change engine oil when your bike completes first 700 kilometers (first service).

Use Shell Super/Speed/Xtra premium/Power petrol
