Honda City Diesel

Honda is likely to offer the new City with the same 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine that powers the Amaze sedan. It is expected to have the same output as the Amaze and this means 98bhp and 200Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. However, there is also a possibility that Honda may introduce the 1.6-litre i-DTEC engine which is in the recently launched UK spec CR-V diesel. It produces 116bhp and 300Nm of torque, a respectable figure for a C-Segment sedan. The petrol on the other hand will continue to be powered by the 1.5-litre i-VTEC mill that produces 116bhp and 146Nm of torque. It is mated to a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic.

Honda is believed to have increased the length and consequently the wheelbase in a bid to increase interior space. We hope that it will adapt the same lines as the current car but in a more sportier design in a bid to make the City appealing to a wider audience. However, the reality is that apart from spy shots of heavily camouflaged cars spotted testing in China, we have no idea of what the car looks like. There is also no official word from the Japanese automaker on the unveiling of the car so we can only speculate on what the new model will be like at this moment.

Hyundai has tasted success with their 'i' range of cars in India, namely the i10 and the i20. Infact, with the i20, they have shown that Indians are now indeed ready to shell out extra money over other rivals for a premium package. The i30 could be the next one from Hyundai for the Indian market. We believe that the company might launch the i30 in India early next year (2013) at around a lakh more than the i20's sticker price. This means that the base version of the i30 should start around the Rs 6 lakh mark, going all the way to around Rs 9.5 for the top end diesel model with all the bells and whistles.

If launched in India, it will be the latest i30 version that has been showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The newer version, as seen here, looks sleeker and modern as compared to the one on sale in international markets. It makes use of Hyundai's fluidic design philosophy that is now visible on products like the new Verna. The i30 is a huge product and will be longer and wider than the i20. That means that the i30 will have cabin space more than some of the sedans in the under Rs 10 lakh bracket in the Indian market. The cabin of the new i30, as seen here, is very modern and futuristic in design. Use of aluminum has been done at various places and like other Hyundai models, the i30 too will get blue backlightning for the dials and buttons at night. There will be more space in the i30 than either the i20 or Verna and expect a spacious boot as well.

Knowing what Hyundai has done with the i20 in India, we expect the i30 to have both petrol and diesel engine options with both manual and automatic transmission on sale as well. The petrol range will include the 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre engines that are also seen on the new Verna. Likewise, the diesel options will also include the 1.4 and 1.6 engines seen on the new Verna Diesel. The top end i30 will come with multiple air-bags, ABS, alloy wheels, steering controls, electrically adjustable driver's seat etc. Pricing for the new Hyundai i30 in India, when launched, will be between Rs 6.5 to Rs 8 lakh, ex-showroom. The new i30 could signal the oncoming of the premium hatchbacks in India and only Hyundai can pull off something like this especially with the brand loyalty and the huge dealership range that it has in India. Remember, the top end Asta i20 does sell in good numbers and is priced over 7 lac for petrol and 8 lac for diesel - this is a strong hint that the i30 might just work in India! We are waiting with our fingers crossed for this one!

The VW Group has targeted becoming the leader in electric and hybrid car sales by 2018, after unveiling its new VW e-Up and VW e-Golf, both of which will go on sale early next year.

Speaking on the eve of the Frankfurt motor show, VW boss Martin Winterkorn outlined that the company had 70,000 employees trained in every aspect of electric drivetrain technology and outlined that the company – chiefly through VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda - would have 14 electric and hybrid cars on sale by the end of next year. He said plug-in vehicles had the greatest sales potential at present.Winterkorn also defended the firm’s late arrival in the electric car market, relative to rivals such as Nissan and Renault. "We are starting at exactly the right time. We are electrifying all vehicle classes, and therefore have everything we need to make the Volkswagen Group the top automaker in all respects, including electric mobility, by 2018.” said Winterkorn.

VW plans to base all its first generation electric and hybrid cars on existing vehicles, so that it has the flexibility to build them on the same production line as the standard cars.

"We have the most comprehensive approach to tomorrow's mobility,” said Winterkorn. “From highly-efficient, eco-friendly diesel, gasoline and natural gas-fuelled engines to classical hybrids, purely battery-driven vehicles and plug-in hybrids - no other automaker can match the broad range we have to offer."The electric car cannot be a compromise on wheels, it must convince customers in every respect."

Toyota has already sold 5.5 million hybrid or electric vehicles in 2013, and is targeting in excess of 11.5 million annually by 2018.
