# # Best Battery Advice for Electric Scooters
For most **daily-use electric scooter riders, Li-ion—especially LFP (LiFePO₄)—is the better long-term choice**. Lithium batteries are lighter, generally have longer cycle life, and provide better usable energy for their weight. ([Deltic EV][1])
| Feature | 🔋 Lead-Acid | ⚡ Li-ion / LFP |
| ---------------- | ------------------ | --------------------- |
| Purchase cost | ✅ Lower | ❌ Higher |
| Battery weight | ❌ Heavy | ✅ Much lighter |
| Range efficiency | ❌ Lower | ✅ Higher |
| Charging | ❌ Usually slower | ✅ Usually faster |
| Life / cycles | ~300–500 cycles | Typically much higher |
| Maintenance | More care required | ✅ Low maintenance |
| Daily riding | ⚠️ Budget choice | ⭐ Best choice |
| Long-term value | ⚠️ Moderate | ⭐ Excellent |
# # # My recommendation
**1. Occasional / short-distance rider → Lead-Acid**
* Best when initial purchase price is the main concern.
* Suitable for low daily kilometres.
* Expect more weight and more frequent battery replacement. ([Deltic EV][1])
**2. Daily rider → Li-ion**
* Better for regular commuting.
* Lower scooter weight.
* Better range and longer battery life.
* Higher initial cost but generally better long-term value. ([ScienceDirect][2])
**3. Heavy daily use / delivery / long-term ownership → LFP**
* My preferred choice where available.
* LFP generally offers excellent cycle durability and thermal stability compared with many other lithium chemistries. ([Komaki][3])
# # # Important: 48V × 30Ah vs 60V × 30Ah vs 72V × 30Ah
The basic battery energy is:
**Voltage × Ah = Watt-hours (Wh)**
* **48V × 30Ah = 1,440 Wh = 1.44 kWh**
* **60V × 30Ah = 1,800 Wh = 1.80 kWh**
* **72V × 30Ah = 2,160 Wh = 2.16 kWh**
So, with the **same 30Ah capacity**, the 72V battery stores 50% more nominal energy than the 48V battery.
However, **do not calculate actual scooter range simply by dividing voltage × Ah by 25**. Real range also depends on motor power, rider weight, speed, road conditions, tyre pressure, battery chemistry, controller efficiency, temperature and riding style.
**Best buying rule:** Don't compare only “30Ah.” Compare **battery voltage + Ah + chemistry + actual Wh/kWh + warranty**.
