Safety is at the core of everything we do. Since our inception in 1927, we have earned a reputation as one of the leaders in automotive safety. We have introduced numerous world-firsts in the area of automotive safety, most famously the three-point safety belt. In recent years, we have been a leader in active safety technologies, such as our award-winning City Safety system, standard on all new Volvos.



Our latest generation of cars, based on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), are full of industry-leading safety technologies which push us further towards our industry-leading safety vision: no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo by 2020. As part of our safety work, Volvo Cars has also focused on driver behaviour to tackle the problems of speeding, intoxication and distraction.



From 2020 all Volvos will have a top speed limit of 180 kph, a move aimed at highlighting the dangers of speeding. Starting in the early 2020s, Volvo cars will include in-car cameras and other sensors that monitor the driver and allow the car to intervene if a clearly intoxicated or distracted driver does not respond to warning signals and risks an accident involving serious injury or death.



The forthcoming technology for autonomous driving also offers an opportunity to radically improve traffic safety for society as a whole. To make this future vision a reality, we have a number of partnerships in the area of autonomous technology. By the middle of the next decade we expect to generate a third of annual sales from autonomous cars.
