8 years ago today, we launched the Ather 450.

The night before, on 3 June 2018, we were sitting in the basement of our venue with paintbrushes and tiny cans of touch-up paint. We were fixing the final details, sticking on decals, and wiping everything down one last time before the big day.

Most people from the media who walked into that room the next day thought that they were there to see the Ather 340. We’d been talking about it for years, it was to be our first scooter.

And then our CEO & co-founder Tarun Mehta said, “Oh, by the way... say hello to the 450!” The room exploded with applause. We watched journalists walk around the scooter and stop at the smallest things: the side stand, the way the mirrors were shaped, even how the number plate was mounted. Details we’d spent months arguing about felt worth it. Later, they rode it and appreciated the responsiveness of the throttle, the ease with which it could overtake, and the overall performance which was unlike electric scooters in India at the time.

Eight years later, the 450 didn’t just launch a product. It was the first electric scooter with many firsts, like its touchscreen dashboard, navigation and performance. It was a pioneer in the electric scooter market that changed what people expected from their scooters, and reaffirmed that it could be desirable, thoughtfully designed, and unapologetically ambitious.
