A new report from the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) shows that cyclist deaths across the EU have declined by just 8% over the past decade, while deaths among motor vehicle occupants have fallen four times faster.
In 2024, 1,926 cyclists were killed, and current progress is far below what is needed to meet the EU’s 2030 road safety targets. Cyclists now account for 10% of all fatalities.
Ireland maintains a relatively low cyclist mortality rate, with fewer than two deaths per million inhabitants annually (2022–2024).
